Restoring with dissimilar hardware: unable to connect to wifi to get recovery after bootable media reboot

Thread needs solution

I am currently using this tutorial (https://kb.acronis.com/content/56637) in hopes of getting my PC back to its old self. I am stuck at teh 4:56 marker in the video, where I have gone into the recovery wizard, click on 'recover>my disks' and find the pathway towards my backup. I'm using the Acronis Cloud, which means in able to get to it, I have to be connected to my wifi. When I go to the network options to connect, it doesn't even list any wifi networks, much less mine...which automatically connects at normal log in.

Any tips on what to do?

Wifi rarely works - lack of supported drivers in Linux (default rescue media) and WinPE rescue media doesn't allow for wifi because Microsfoft doesn't include the necessary component - adding wifi drivers to winpe won't do any good since the wifi components just don't exist in WinPE.

You can be on the Internet, but should use a network cable for offline backup and recovery tasks.  If you have a tablet or a device without a NIC, you should look to get a USB 3.0 to ethernet adapter.  ONe of these would work.

I like this one because it has some extra USB ports as well, but costs a little more:  https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Gigabit-Ethernet-Converter-Support/dp/B014ZOJX7W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1488607639&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+3+to+ethernet

Anything by Anker or Cable Matters should be good - I'd stay away from teh really cheap stuff, but most USB 3.0 to Gigabyte ethernet adapters should be fine.

Sorry I should have left more info with what OS/PC I'm using! I'm on Windows desktop, I hooked up my internet to my desktop via ethernet, and I'm still getting the same error message, saying it cannot connect to the internet when the recovery wizard option for 'Acronis cloud' comes up for me to log into my cloud service.

Would I still need an ethernet adapter or anything? Or am I just having a case of bad luck?

Maybe a screenshot?  Are you saying you're logged into full-blown Windows and still can't get to the Internet?  Or you're starting the recovery from Windows and then booting into the recovery mode and that's where you're not getting access to Acronis cloud?  The recovery wizard prompt for the Cloud should only happen when you're in the recovery environment.  If you start the recovery from Widnows, it just reboots the machine and boots into the Linux Acronis environment.  You shoujld be able to see if you have a network connection from there.  If you have a 169.x.x.x IP, youre NIC is not getting a real IP address.

You should be able to check that you're getting an IP address.  Normally, it would be 192.168.1.X or 10.10.10.X - depends on how your router is configured really.  169.x.x.x is a loopback though - no IP address.
