Saving disk image

Thread needs solution

My Surface PRO 3 has a problem and MS is sending a new one.  However I need to return this one first. I use Acronis True Image 2016.  My Surface is currently working, but how can I "clone" an image of it to put on the new PC that I don't have yet?

Pat, you won't be cloning in this case.  Instead, take a full disk backup image.  You will then be restoring that image to the new one when you get it.  As a precaution, I would also take an image fo the new Sufrace Pro "as is" before doing anything else. That way, you can alwasy start from or return to the default OS that came from the system.

These user videos show the backup and restore process works using the Acronis offline bootable recovery media.   Make sure you are using the latest version of Acronis and create good bootable media ahead of time to backup the existing system and then use it to later restore the image.

Many thanks.

However, I'm not sure how to get my new system to fire up with Acronis. When I start up the only option is Windows.

Patt,

Surface Pro's require that you disable fastboot in the bios first.  These instructions should help and there's an online video too:

Step 1: Shut down your Surface Pro

Step 2: Press and hold the volume-up button

Step 3: Press and release the power button while holding down the volume up button

Step 4: Release the volume up button when the Surface logo appears

Step 5: Select ‘Secure Boot Control’

Step 6: Select ‘Disable’

Step 7: Select ‘Exit Setup’, then ‘Yes’ to save and restart the device

Glad to help out!  Hope you're on track now.
