Single Version Scheme

Thread needs solution

I back up once a week using the single version scheme to minimise the space needed.

When it backed up last night it did not remove the previous instance so now the space required has doubled.

Any ideas why this has happened. Can I just delete the previous version based on the date it was generated?

Michael, if you modified the backup task at any point, it may have reset the backup count.  Did you rename the backup task, change settings, etc since originally creating it or after the first backup ran?  If there's room on the disk, I'd let it run once more and see if it cleans up things after that.

Keep in mind though, that cleanup only occures AFTER the next full backup has successfully completed.  Sounds like it did complete last night though.

You may want to download the logviewer app and check last nights log for any errors.  You can post the log here as well if you'd like.

As for manually deleting backups outside of the app, it is completely doable.  However, Acronis keeps track of backups in a database and won't know about the changes made to backup files outside of it.  If you move or delete backups in Windows Explorer (outside of Acronis), you should then go back into Acronis and either attempt a recovery or validation.  It should then tell you that files are missing and ask you to locate them or ignore them.  Ignore all of them and then the database will be up to date again.

Michael,

You should download the Log File Viewer at:

https://forum.acronis.com/forum/115626

The service log may provide answers as to why it did not delete the previous version.

As far as deleting the previous version, I need to do some research on the single version scheme before I can make a recommendation.

Thanks for the suggestions.

One thing I forgot to mention is that my system crashed over the weekend and I successfully restored it using the single image. No idea why it crashed. It went into a continuous loup going from "preparing automatic repair" to "diagnosing your Pc". I am running windows 10. Anyway all seems to be working properly now.

I have downloaded the log file user for last night and is shown below:

message=Writing full version to file: Single Backup_full_b20_s1_v1-2.tib

These entries then continue in id order.

I notice in the log that there is an error message.

I will follow the advice and see if it backs up on schedule and delaetes the older ones.

Michael,

"message=Writing full version to file: Single Backup_full_b20_s1_v1-2.tib"

The -2.tib ending indicates that ATI considers both files to be part of the same backup.  They should both be deleted when the next backup runs.

The back up ran as usual last night but still left the previous back up behind. I deleted it manually as suggested. I then validated the remaining back up after telling Acronis to ignore the missing one.

The validation worked so hopefully the problem is now  over. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
