SOLVED: Universal restore does not see the O/S

Thread needs solution

Hello folks! It has been a while since I needed help, but here I am again seeking your advice. :)

I did a backup/restore with ATIH 2016, then ran Universal restore. Every time it tells me that there is no O/S in the hard drive, only sees it as folder. But if I take that drive and put it back in the previous machine, no problem and it boots without hesitation or error. That's where it is at the moment. :)

I run windows 10, 64 bit, home edition. I followed the instructions from the UR user guide, but cannot get passed the "no O/S" issue.

I have this brand new build sitting there and nagging me. I would really appreciate any advice you could provide. :)

Thanks in advance.

Serge

Well, I cannot speak for why it is telling you there is no OS but if it were me I would install it in the intended machine that you created it for and see if it works.  I think it will!

When Universal Restore doesn't find an operating system it usually means there is an issue with your BCD.

For example on a test system I renamed the BCD to BCD.old and ran Universal Restore. It did not find an operating system.  After using BCDboot to create a new BCD, Univeral Restore correctly recognized the operating system.

Also if the old system boots legacy/BIOS and the new one is configured to boot UEFI that may play a part in the cannot find operating system message.

Thank you for your comments!  I will definitelly try the BCD file issue/repair.  Will gather all the info I need to perform this procedure.  Will let you know how it goes when done.  Wish me luck! :)

It appears that the problem is a BIOS issue.

New mother board is: Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3P (Uses UEFI)

Previous motherboard is: Gigabyte GA-P67X-UD3-B3 (Older board)

Now I'm trying to see if I can use universal restore to recover or if I will have to re-install everything. Not my choice of procedure though.

Any suggestions?

Your older install was Legacy MBR boot?  If yes change boot mode of new bios to Legacy CSM enable or Legacy - UEFI - Legacy first.

Follow up on my issue - SOLVED

After many attempts, this is how I got it to work for me.

- Booted with windows-10 DVD.

- Deleted all partitions.

- Format X:/FS:NTFS /Q    <<-------(Use your actual HD location).

- Installed windows-10 from dvd and skiped the registration part.

- Booted ATIH-2016 DVD and performed the restore, and booted from the hard drive. NOTE that I did not used Universal restore.

- Removed old video card drivers and utilities.

- Installed new motherboard drivers and utilities.

- Installed new video card drivers and utilities.

- Did some house keeping and removed utilities from the old motherboard.

- PC remained powered on overnight, and this morning windows-10 was asking to register my copy. :)  I just entered the licence number from my windows-7 disk. So far, so good.

I hope this can help or at least provide some help to someone. :)

Hello

I purchased Acronis TrueImage 2017 just a few weeks ago.

In my case, I did a full backup of my laptop. and wanted to test out Universal Restore... So I created a new Universal Restore disk with drivers, (VMware drivers)

So I can test the restore on a Virtual machine. I made the VHardware almost similar to my laptop. Same disk space, CPU core, RAM.

But When I boot with the Universal Restore disk it says It cannot find the Operating System. It sees the Drive C as folders...

The VM already had a Windows 10 VM running. So I wanted to Test Universal Restore on a dissimilar hardware to increase my confidence if one day I needed to restore my backups on a different computer due to failure of my laptop.

I tried it also on a Blank laptop with NO Files... NO restore.

So far, No confidence. I tried many times. Unless I am totally misunderstanding what Universal Restore is supposed to do.

Any Help would be appreciated.
