Some basic questions thoughts

Thread needs solution

I've been using acronis a long time.

I open 2016 at friends house after telling him to buy it only to

a. not see a way to backup to a  directory on a usb drive or to create one backup configuration.  What did I miss?   Not like Documentation is good for anything.

Mac version is so useless I won't even comment any further on it.  Thank god for rsync.

2016 looks like a real downgrade for me.

Hello Kelly,

I am able to backup data to directories / folders on either a fixed drive or on a removable USB drive.

What type of backup were you trying to perform, i.e. Entire PC, Disks or Partitions, or Files and Folders?

In order to either select or create a new directory / folder, you must have navigated to a place in the destination target path that allows for this option to be offered.

There have been lots of comments about the changed / simplified / dumbed down GUI design of ATIH 2016 & 2015 and these have been fed back to the Acronis developers, though I guess they are aiming at a less technical end-user market?

Please use the Feedback tool (found in the GUI Help section) to pass on your own comments about any of the design &/or features of the product to the developers.  The more who do so - the better chance they may take notice & offer a choice of how the GUI is presented, i.e. Simplifed for non-techies, or Advanced for those who want to drill down to the bits & bytes.

Kelly,

Make sure the thumb drive is plugged in first and showing up in Windows with a drive letter, before launching Acronis.  You can then do a disk or file/folder backup of the drive as needed.

Something else to keep in mind... thumb drives can change drive letters as Windows will assign the next letter available if the drive letter it previously used is being used by another device.  If you set up a scheduled/recurring backup for a thumb drive while it has a spefici drive letter, that scheduled task will no longer work if the drive letter has been changed by Windows.

----------------------------------------------

example:

thumbdrive1 is insterted and shows up as E:\.  You create a scheduled daily backup of the E:\ drive in Acronis, run the backup and remove thumbdrive1from the computer.

You insert thumbdrive2 and it becomes E:\ automatically by Windows.   Your backup is scheduled to run, but does not - why?  This is not the same E:\ drive that Acronis was originally configured to backup.

While thumbdrive2 is still insterted and using E:\, you also insert thumbdrive1 again.  Thumbdrive1 is now assigned the nexter available letter in Windows which is now going to be F:\ since E:\ is already currently in use.

Thumbdrive1 will now retain the F:\ letter by default unless something else is plugged in and already using F:\ at that time.  If F:\ is in use already, in this case, it might revert back to E:\ (if nothing else is currently using E:\ at that time), or it may become G:\, the next available letter in Windows.
