Stuck in Automatic Repair loop after trying to clone data from HDD to SSD.

Thread needs solution

Preface: The 2012 Lenovo desktop my family uses has become a tad slow over the years so I encouraged my parents to buy an SSD to replace the HDD. I was told initially to do a fresh install of Windows, but after telling folks in the Discord that there are 6 users in this system with their own stuff, they told me to go ahead and clone the stuff on the hard drive over to the SSD. The system is running Windows 10.

The SSD I purchased was a WD Blue 3D NAND 2TB SSD. The HDD I am replacing is a Seagate 1 TB drive. Here is the procedure I followed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlXkYKzY6vs)

1. I went to WD's site and downloaded their SSD Dashboard. From that, I installed the Acronis software.

2. I created a bootable media disk using the software and inserted the disc into the computer.

3. I powered down the system, connected the SSD to a spare cable, and booted through the disk drive. The software opens I clicked start or whatever it said.

4. I went to tools and utilities and clicked the clone disk option.

4. I selected automatic.

5. Both drives popped up. It automatically recognized the unpartitioned SSD as the drive to copy the data to. Cool.

6. I clicked proceed to start the cloning process. It made it about halfway through before giving me an error and telling me it failed. The log stated, "MFT Bitmap corrupted." I did a google search.

7. I found this forum post: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/acronis-true-image-2016-forum/clone-err… I followed the first link. Here is what it told me to do:

a) Run SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt. Did that.

b) Run chkdsk /f /r. I was met by another error: "Chdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process." It asks me if I would like it to run the next time the system boots. I put in a Y, press enter, and restart the computer.

This is where the trouble begins. Windows reboots and says "scanning and repairing drive" or something along those lines. Then it says that it was not able to repair my PC. I click the shutdown option. I try to boot again and it tells me that it could not repair my PC again. It appears I am stuck in a loop. Help?

Griffin, welcome to these public User Forums.

Do you have a full disk backup of your Seagate 1TB HDD that you could use to recover your computer from?

MFT Bitmap corrupted is a filesystem issue for the Seagate drive and would normally be resolved by running CHKDSK /F but this really depends on whether there are other contributing factors that caused this corruption, i.e. if you have a failing drive?

Dedicated diagnostic utilities from the disk manufacturers take the longest time to complete the checks, but provide the most accurate methods of checking whether the disk is good or needs replacement:

 - Seagate disks: SeaTools for Windows

See forum topic here for another option that you can try.

Please see forum topic: [IMPORTANT] CLONING - How NOT to do this - which was written after dealing with many cloning issues in the forums.

Note: if you have a second computer, then you may find it easier to remove the Seagate HDD from the 2012 Lenovo desktop and connect it via a USB dock or adapter to the other computer, then be able to run CHKDSK /F to the drive from a Windows Explorer panel by right-clicking on the Seagate drive, selecting Properties, then in the new Properties panel, open the Tools tab and use the Error checking option shown there.  This way you are not trying to boot from the problem drive.
