Techniques for handling shutdown issues
I know there are a bunch of posts on this subject, but I can't seem to find one that contains techniques for dealing with shutdown issues. I upgraded from 2014 to 2016 and, along with some discontinued functionality, now I have to deal with a change in the way shutdown functions. Upon shutdown during a backup, 2014 would delay shutdown until the backup finished. That worked just fine for me because I didn't have to check for backup running before every shutdown. And if I needed an immediate shutdown I could start ATI and cancel the backup.
2016 is different - upon shutdown during a backup, 2016 delays backup for a few minutes (presumable to quiesce gracefully) and then cancels the backup. That's not very nice! So now it appears that I need to check to see if a backup is running every time I do a shutdown. I see an option that tells ATI to shutdown after backup is complete, but I presume using that option might result in an unexpected shutdown while I'm working.
Does anyone have any techniques for handling this "feature"? Should I cut my losses and go with different software? Thanks!

Yes, I did find it useful. Thank you! This method could work if I move the backup times to late at night and let the backup turn off the PC instead of me doing it. Still would like a more elegant solution but this might be good enough.
