TI 2016 wants a password to allow me to recover my computer??

Thread needs solution

Hi All,

I'm stuck.  My Lenovo Flex 3 died, and was repaired under warranty.  As expected it came back reimaged as a brand new machine, all my stuff wiped, as expected...

So - boot from my bootable media, find my latest backup on my 2 TB external drive, and start the restore.  so far so good, then - It wants a password!!!  WTF? I did not save this machine with a password.  I've recovered another machine of mine with Acronis 2013, for example, in the past and did not need a password.  I presume there must be a default password for TI 2016?  it was not anything obvious like "admin" or "password", or the password on the Lenovo.  I'm dead in the water - Office, MSProject, and others are not available until I recover the hard drive.  I've tried all 3 versions of this machine's backup and all three want a password...

Can anyone help me figure out 1. why it wants a password; 2. more importantly - what is the password?

Thanks!

Greg

You should only be prompted for a password if you included one when the backup task was created. If you encrypted the backup you would need a password to access it. There is no default password (in ATI 2015/2016/2017 - cannot remember any futher back).

It is possible that you accidentally activated the password requirment. I assume you have tried it with an empty password (no content).

If this does not work, I suggest you contact Acronis technical support. However, I hold out little hope that they will be able to help, as the idea is that once a password is put in place the backup can only be accessed with the password.

PS This is one reason why it is a good idea to test that the backup has been successful (by going through the steps to do a recovery) when you will loose access to the system being imaged.

Also where is the backup stored? If on a network share, you would need to enter network credentials to access the share. Those credentials would. E different than any local backup passwords you may have set and if none was set then I would suspect the password being requested is for the networks share.

If a password was set on the backup and was unintentional or just not remembered, you're out of luck. Might  send a screenshot of the prompt to help identify what type of password it's looking for.
