Trouble with Universal Restore

Universal Restore looks like just the product I need. My current system is slowly dying so I am building a new PC and want to transfer all my existing programs, settings etc. Whilst I'm at it I'd like to move my OS to a SSD rather than HDD.

Having been let down so many times in the past by software that does not do what it claims, it's good to see a trial version exists.

Using True Image I have been able to migrate the OS to SSD on my existing computer. This gives me some confidence for a full purchase of TureImage when I get my new computer up and running, but it's not what I need to do at the moment.

I've tried to use the Universal Restore to migrate to another PC. when I run this it keeps asking for the same 4 drivers....

I have the disc with the motherboard drivers but this does not help Universal Restore. I've tried looking for these drivers online but can't locate them but believe they are connected to PCI or USB (in either instance I thought only the chipset and SATA controllers were essential and Unversal Restore does not seem to ask for those.) My USB sockets do not work on the new PC (though I'm convinced they did on my first attempt at Universal Restore) though I'm sure once the OS is running I can reload those drivers off the motherboard driover disc, but that doesn't help with installations at the moment. (In fact the restoration took place "through" the old computer as the new one can't read the Backup Image which is on USB)

If I just "ignore all" Universal Restore tells me that it has Completed. But it does not boot - just eventually takes me to Winodws recovery mode. When I run this it can't repair itself.

If I knew with 100% certainty that this is due to Trial limitations, and the full product would work, I'd go ahead. But when one aspect does not work I doubt the full version will make any diifference (Nothing says Trial or Limited about the features I'm using. I've already created the image and have the bootable media True Image and Universal Restore burned to a CD.

This looks like it may be a great product but I'm going for 3rd party software as windows couldn't even back up an image of the sytem files to an external HDD.

Can anyone please offer any suugestions as to why this isn't working?

Cirens, when are you being prompted for drivers?  When I run UR, I typcially just run it "as is" without providing any drivers at that time.  This generalizes the OS drivers like how it would install drivers on a Fresh install of Windows and should make it bootable just like that.  Then, once booted into Windows, I'll go into device manager and update drivers for each device necessary, using the manufacturer drivers.

A couple of notes about transferring your old OS to a new piece of hardware... make sure the bios supports the OS install method... for instance, if the old PC was installed in legacy/bios mode, but the new motherboard is UEFI by default, make sure you have legacy/csm/bios mode enabled  on the board.  Some new motherboards require that the top boot order is "windows boot manager" an you can't actually select a specific hard drive like you could on legacy bios systems.  It took me a long time to figure this out on my Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 3 motherboard. 

Last - SATA mode in the bios.  If the old system SATA mode was set as AHCI, make sure it is set the same way in the new one (usually there are options for RAID, AHCI and SATA... if you you have an OOOOOLD computer - then IDE might be there too, but a new board won't have it).

Ultimately, Acronis should do exactly what you want as long as the bios is configured properly, after running Universal Restore to generalize the drivers.  I believe the trial version is limited to only being able to restore in a bootable manner to the same hardware so you won't have success with it in this case.  YOu can purchase the current version and have 30 days to return, no questions asked..

In short I followed the advice of matching the BIOS, bought the full version. And it seems to work. Yay! The disaply is wrong but I know that’s just due to needing to install the drivers for the motherboard etc. No biggie, I'm sure.

But a curious thing happened on the way.

I ran True Image (backing up to a HDD) and left it to it whilst I watched a film to pass the time. On my return I found that there were 38 minutes to go. But in the SysTray I had a warning from windows that a Trojan had been discovered. Win32/Rundas!plock I followed the Microsoft Security Essentials advice and removed this threat at which point True Image immediately informed me that the back up had finished. (i.e the 38 minutes to go just disappeared.

This is the version I have installed on the new PC.

Not convinced this would install via SATA I decided to run a second backup on a removal (caddied) HDD connected by USB. I let this run whilst I was attempting the restore on the new computer.

When  returned there was a green tick displayed on the True Image page but no banner or wording informing me of success. (should there have been.) I began to doubt I had set this running. But indeed a file had been created.

However, there is a discrepancy on the file sizes….

Backup 1)    79,529,043. Which had that Trojan warning and then was suddenly complete. To SATA connected bare HDD drive

2nd

Backup 2)   82,042,142. Which was to the caddied, USB connected HDD drive.

 

In both instances I selected a Sector-by-Sector backup. I copied just the partitions of my C drive that include the system restore. (the disk itself is further partitioned to a D drive on which I keep my documents but I did not copy that).

 

I’m reluctant to reinstall to the second version in case all goes awry again, but might I be missing vital data from the operating system. Why would removing a Trojan from the OS increase the amount of data on it?
