True image 2016 trial version - I simply do not understand it

Thread needs solution

I downloaded the acronis 2016 trial version to see if it works. If it did I would be happy to buy a 3-5 PC license.

With all due respect, I'm trying to back up a working image and then restore it to another, identical laptop with a larger HD.

I don't see how it works. I was able to make a backup - I think. It's not at all clear how to restore it.

Any help is appreciated.

David,

When restoring to different hardware, you would need Acronis Universal Restore, which is not available in the "Free" version.

My recommendation is to do a search of "Universal Restore" on the blog here, and see what issues others have had.

Universal restore is not needed.  The hardware is the same!  You can either clone the hard drive by connecting the new drive to the original computer (usb adapters works well) or create an Acronis boot drive, boot to Acronis restore, and restore the image you created (now connected to the new laptop).  You can expand the partition during the restore or later in Windows.

Givmeabreak,

While the hardware is the same, they are not identical.  As a minimum, the ethernet cards will have different mac addresses.  As to whether Windows attaches a serial number to a particular machine, I don't know.  At best, I would say using the free version to do a restore to a different machine, results could be unpredictable.

I wanted David to know that Acronis has a product designed to do what he wants to do.

David,

The free version only allows restores while booted from rescue media.  So, you will need to create the rescue media and then perform the restore.
