TrueImage 2016 restore process does not continue after reboot.

Thread needs solution

I am trying to restore my C: partition on a Windows 10 PC. After I've chosen my backup file and its destination, and told it to start the restore process, it tells me to reboot. Fair enough. But the process doesn't continue after the PC reboots. Acronis doesn't restart in any way, let alone restart ready to do the restore job.

Any ideas?

When you restore the OS partition from within Windows, the PC is supposed to restart an run the Linux recover media which is temporarily placed on the HDD. This can cause issues with the PC booting as the boot record can be damaged. What you need to do is create or download recovery media, then boot the PC using the recovery media, then recover your installation (making sure that the box for disk signature is activated). Hopefully this will fix the problem.

The MVPs recommend using the recovery media whenever you need to recover your system partition; the reasons are the same as those when cloning. The temporary Linux installation can make a complete mess of things - see discussion here.

Thanks very much Ian, for that response.

In the event, I solved the problem by buying the 2018 upgrade, and miraculously, this time the restore process continued after I restarted the computer, and the image was restored.

I was a bit mystified by what was there after the restore. Certainly the restore, of an 11 month old image, seemed to go OK. I watched the progress on the TrueImage information window, with its DOS-style text font. And Windows and the programs are running much better now.

I went to Windows Update to start the process of updating for all the updates that have come through in the last eleven months. I was surprised that it said it was already up to date.

I was also surprised to see that programs I had installed more recently than my October 2016 image are still there. As was the wallpaper photo I installed two months ago.

The image I had restored was my C: drive, which included Windows 10, plus all my programs.

How come all this newer stuff is showing up?  I expected to see the computer restored exactly to where it was last October.

Not that I'm complaining...

Thanks

John
