Bill, the only settings that you need are as shown in the full picture attached.
You need to put your own private email where I have shown steve@myISP.com and put your own Gmail email account address where I have put stevesaccount@gmail.com that is all that is needed.

Steve, I did that. I'm actually a professional backup guy. been doing this since 95'. I just havent used acronis before, more speciifcally home based products, more enterprise software.

are there any updates or patches, i installed the binaries from the web only?

Bill, it may be worth starting again here, what build number do you have for ATIH 2016 - the latest is 6027 - you can see this information on the Account page of the program GUI. This page also has an option to automatically check for updates which should be ticked by default.
What system do you have ATIH 2016 installed on?
Did you download the program installer from your Acronis Account online? or is this a product that came bundled with a new hard drive? If the latter, then it may be a limited version with restrictions imposed by the drive vendor and supported by them too.

Bill, if you enter all information as shown in the screenshot of post #4 it should work. For me it works pretty fine with Gmail as SMTP.
There are some traps (especially with Gmail) you want to avoid:
1. Do you use two factor login with your Google account? If so, you need to create an app password in your Google account which can be used for automated logins and doesn't require to input a verification code.
2. Make sure you used the correct SMTP-Server url. Google runs three SMTP services. Some of them require authentification, some of them don't. Most probabely you want to use "smtp.gmail.com". You find an overview here: https://support.google.com/a/answer/176600?hl=en
3. Did you use the correct port number? Which port number to use with which encryption method you'll also find in the overview in point 2.

i did exactly as yor screenshot showed, is the port 465 or 25. im going to create another account and enable everything
- Log in to post comments

went ahead and create a new gmail account. enabled less secure apps, no 2-factor
server settings: smtp.gmail.com port 25/none. ive been using ssl port 465

Bill, I guess youve hit the page I mentioned in my previous post.
You should use the information from the second column that goes for the SMTP-Server "smtp.gmail.com". Even if the first column is supposed to be the recommended way. I doubt you can use a static IP to authenticate...
Use port 465 for SSL encryption 587 for TLS. Don't use no encryption with port 25.
If you need help on how to create an app password to use without the two factor login for True Image see here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

does it work now?

yeah i did.
reset to initial setting

server setting: smtp.gmail.com, port 465, ssl
smtp auth: set

app password is not supported for this account type

Do you have 2-step autentication turned on in your Gmail account? This is suggesting you're using an application password instead of a regular password which usually means that 2-step is on and may require approval in your Gmail settings.

as i said post #12 no 2-step. whatever a new account has.

i honestly dont think its a google issue at this point. there is something on that is breaking this functionality on this particular pc. can i get phone support on this issue do you think? i really need to get this fixed
- Log in to post comments

Bill, this is just a User Forum rather than an official support site, so if you need phone support you may need to do this on a fee basis directly with Acronis Support via their web site. As Bobbo has indicated the options we have shared in this thread are working for us, though we are not using the 2-step authentication with Gmail. For myself, I did try to get email notifications working with my normal ISP email account but encountered errors so switched to using a basic gmail account that I only use for this one purpose.

I do not have 2-step turned on.. I am using a regular password

thats what i am using basic gmail. just because its working on your machine does not mean it will work on the one i am working on. there could be myriad of other issues preventing from this to work. at what point do we say its not a gmail issue, but pc related. quite frankly i feel like we are going in circles.

Bill, I understand your frustration with this issue, it is equally frustrating for the folks in the forum who want to try to help you resolve the issue. I have notifications using gmail set and working on at least 5 different systems running a mix of Windows 7 & 10 OS and mix of ATIH 2015 & 2016.
One step that you could try to help check if this is an issue on your specific PC / setup, would be to perform a new clean install of ATIH 2016 by first uninstalling the current program, running the Acronis Cleanup tool (link in my signature) and then downloading / installing a new copy of the installation executable. Note: if you want to save copies of your current backup task scripts, these can be found in the C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts folder. I would recommend just trying to setup a simple test backup with email notification after the clean install before putting back any older scripts if you choose to save these.
The key test is whether you can send a Test Message once you configure the Notification panel - if not then nothing else will work. I am assuming that all normal email activity on this system works without issue. Have you checked that your Security applications (Firewall) is not playing any part in blocking ATIH from sending messages?

i will try this after we confirm its not a config issue. I dont think windows firewall blocks outbound traffic. doesnt ATIH setup windows firewall rules? i guess you are running on vm's id imagine!
- Log in to post comments

Bill, thanks for the PM information, I created a quick test backup task in ATIH 2016 and setup notification using your gmail account credentials and was able to successfully send a test message plus do the same for a backup though for some reason no actual email came through to my personal email account I used. The key point here being that the settings you gave did not give any error message when tried initially, though did later when I assume you changed your password.
I am running on actual Windows machines and not using any Virtual Machines with ATIH.
I am not using Windows Firewall on the machine I am using for testing today but I did find a firewall rule which had been created for the Acronis TrueImageMonitor.exe program as shown in the screen shot attached.

so its working on your machine. and you didnt have to change anything on gmail? so what are my next steps, reinstall?
- Log in to post comments

Bill, I just logged into the Gmail web interface to confirm I had the correct credentials then used those in the test backup task I created and successfully sent the test email using them.
I would guess that the next logical step is to try the reinstall but ensuring that you do the cleanup inbetween removing and putting back, and using an administrator account for the install.

Steve, i tried this on a win764 vm and i have the same issue. id like to see this work on this vm which is plane jane. so why doesnt it work on this as well? are you doing this on a win7 64bit?

i just noticed actually the error is authentication failed on the vm and on the pc with the issue
- Log in to post comments

Bill, as I said before I have this working on 5 physical machines, the one I tested your credentials on is a Windows 10 64 bit laptop, the others which have it working include a Windows 7 32bit desktop, Windows 10 64 bit 2 x desktop & 1 laptop.
If you are trying this on a VM is there anything in the NAT settings that could be stopping this?
Are you able to test this on a physical machine?

Hey, folks...
I just installed ATI 2016 today, latest release, using Win10. I, too, have been trying to get notification to work with gmail. I followed above instructions, and can't get a test message to come through. The only thing I see I have different, is that I'm using my gmail account in the "To" box.
In the attached snapshot, I substituted my real gmail address with "MyGMAIL@gmail.com
Any suggestions?

I just setup Gmail with an older version of LiveMail (I prefer it over Outlook). It kept telling me the password was not allowed becuase the application was not secure. There is a setting in Gmail now that requires this to be manually overriden by the user in their Gmail account and I'm wondering if this is what is blocking connections.
Please see this article. Remvoing the option in my Gmail account allowed access to LiveMail again - perhaps it is needed for Acronis as well?

I found the setting you mentioned, and overrode the setting. This did the trick! Thanks! I think I'll probably set up a separate gmail account just for ATI, and set the security filter back on my main gmail.
Thanks again!

ended up using hmail locally then forward emails, which works. so for whatever reason gmail doeasnt work, but dont care. as long i can get the emails from the software.

Bill, I know that you have now got email working using hmail as per your last post, but I believe I have found the reason why Gmail is giving problems.
Please see post http://forum.acronis.com/forum/114580#comment-338859 where I was able to test this issue and get it working.
