Unable to access file within .TIB Backup (NAS storage)

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I have setup differential backups of my local hdd that backups to a QNAP TS-451A NAS storage device.

The backup runs fine but when I try to open a file from the tib-Backup by double click on the tib-file using Windows 10 explorer

the following happens:

1. Acronis prompts me to locate volume with number 1, than 2 and so forth

2. when windows explorer shows the list of folders I double click the folder where the requested file is stored

3. acronis again starts prompting me to locate volume number 1... (see 1.)

4. Finaly when windows explorer shows the content of the folder  I click on a file and try to drag the file to my windows desktop

Acronis again prompts for the last volume of the backup and the starts to copy the file but I'm getting an error: Interface not supported for this operation and the file is not copied to my desktop.

The same error occurs when I try to copy and paste the file to my windows desktop

I am accessing the backup using Windows explorer by entering \\<ip.adress>\BodosBackup\Development into the explorer adress box.

I have already tried to mount the tib backup file but Acronis prompts "error assigning drive letter"

Also I tried the above with other backup (tib) that are stored on the NAS device, but the results are the same.

Any help on how to troubleshoot is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Bodo, there are a couple of different reasons why you may be seeing the issues you describe in your post above.

  1. There is a known issue that can cause problems with viewing backups and cause prompts for the 'last volume' among other symptoms.  See post: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/117232#comment-359062 for advice on clearing specific Acronis Database cache files that can cause this issue.
  2. If backup files have been deleted manually via Explorer or other file management tools, instead of allowing the backup task to do automatic cleanup, then the Acronis Database information stored for the task will be out of synch with the actual files stored on your NAS, which will cause these prompts for each missing file.
For this situation you will need to perform a Validation of the backup task and answer the error prompts with Ignore to try to reconcile the Database information to the actual available files status.
Alternatively, use the task 'Clone settings' option to create a duplicate backup task which will be prefixed with (1) then before running that new task, remove the settings for the original task, which will 'clean' the database of references to the tasks and its files etc.  You could then remove the (1) prefix from the task name then do a validation to allow ATIH to find the available files on the NAS.

Thanks Steve,

deleting all the files in C:\Users\[your_username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database

works, Acronis no longer prompts me to locate the last version or backup volume #...

Validation of the backup succeeded.

Now I can access and copy files from a tib-backup, this works for me.

I used QNAP filestation app to download the tib file first to my local hdd and than double click on the tib file to access the file that I am after.

Thanks again

Bodo, thanks for the feedback / confirmation that this tip still works the magic!

Hello,

after following Steves suggestion to delete all the files in C:\Users\[your_username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database ,

today I was hit again by "Please locate the last version of the backup" message.

All of my scheduled backups are validated by the same task.

After deleting all file in the Database folder, I'm no longer prompt, but that cannot be the solution for this issue?

I'm not sure why it has come back for you again.  I've typcially only experieinced this directly after an upgrade - and that was with earlier versions of Acronis. I have not seen this since upgrading to 2017, and don't really remember it being an issue in the final versions of 2016.

As a work-a-round, you can automatically clear this at each logon (under the hood without having to worry about it).  Grab the .bat file from our MVP Google Drive:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8uZDIFmupY7QUpDNmlnTFE4b0U

Put it in %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Every time you log into the machine, it will then run automatically and hopefully will alleviate you from having to do this manually.
