Unable to backup network attached files on windows 10.

Thread needs solution

I think this started about the time I changed my passwords to all my systems. I don’t have a separate user for the acronis backups but could create one if needed. When looking at the WEB help it says Right click on backup name to change credentials. Well in my 2016 I right click and I get Rename, Clone or Delete. Where do the credentials get set at?

While in the destination screen at the top of that screen is an address field that shows Back up to:.  It may be faint in view but if you position your mouse near the top of the window and click you should get the cursor to stick there.  Once you do that type in the network path.  Now look to the right sight of the field and you should see a > carat.  Just click on that and you will presented with an Athentication box where you can enter credentials.

The format for the address is \\sharename\folder\.   If that fails replace sharename with the IP address of the device.

I’m sorry I explained that incorrectly. I have as file share mapped to my workstation that I've been backing up for a while. It suddenly quit working and backups went from 8mb differential backups to 800kb since it was only backing up the local files. Reading the forms I found where the log files are at and found this error:

<event id="26" level="4" module="4" code="17" time="1458289493" message="File or folder '\\196.100.100.60\BigDisk\Kathys Phone\' cannot be found." />

<event id="27" level="4" module="485" code="27" time="1458289493" message="Cannot find the files or folders selected for the backup." line_tag="0x8948510CD2B4C8FB" >

WxlAE4AAAAAAAAAAAA=</error>

I can do a start>run and paste \\196.100.100.60\BigDisk\Kathys Phone and that directory opens in file explorer.

I have deleted and recreated the backup, created the test backup above and I can select the files on the share to backup but get the same "Cannot find the files or folders selected for the backup."  When executing the backup.

Thanks

Since you recently changed passwords on your system you would then need to update the password for the share in True Image.  Follow the suggestions above to get the credentials box to appear, enter username and password and choose connect.  Once connection is reestablished you should be good to go.

I have a system I call my server but it is just a Win 10 desktop system that all our personal files are on call it computer A. Im on computer B with Acronis installed on it and have my documents as a share on computer A (Drive Z:\). I can edit my files on computer A from computer B. I have acronis backup on computer B and have it select the files on computer A to back up. When the backup kicks off it says it cannot find the files on computer A even after it lets me browse to computer A to select them to backup. The files on A are mapped to computer B as my Z:\ drive.

So it not that I'm trying to put the backups on the network share A but backup from the network share A.

Thanks for the help!

Timothy, have you checked the Windows 10 Credentials Manager for any credentials held there for your target system where you are accessing the file shares from that you are trying to backup?

Type in Credential at the Start prompt and take the option for Windows Credential Manager.

You have discovered the increased sharing security of Windows 10 I believe.   On the machine A, use Explorer to access the Z folder.  Right click on the folder and choose Properties then Security.  In the permissions add computer B.

No option there to add computer other than itself. The users that attach to it all have local accounts on A that are used when accessing the files. I've assumed that acronis has been using my account when accessing these folders for backup. Its strange that acronis can browse to the Z:\ folder to select the files for backup.

Computer A - Nothing there other than MicrosoftOffice, OneDrive, virtualapp/didlogical and SSO_POP_Device.

Computer B - Same there but there is a credential for with computer A's ip addreess I edited it with the current password and no change. Still access the files as normal and can browse fron acronis but will not find files when backing up.

In Windows Credentials Manager add Computer B IP address with that machines credentials.  Try to run the backup again and see if that changes anything.

Can you delete the mapped share in Windows and recreate it.  At that time, it should prompt for credentials in Windows as well - click the box to save the information so that it stays persistently mapped for you as well.

Then go back into Acronis and change the destination and credentials there too.

Any luck after that?

I deleted the share on A (the target), checked and reset sharing and security on the target share then recreated the share. On B I deleted the map and remapped drive Z:\ and deleted the backup in Acronis and recreated the backup browsing to Z:\ to select the files. When the backup starts I get the same error

<event id="26" level="4" module="4" code="17" time="1459002864" message="File or folder '\\196.100.100.60\BigDisk\Kathys Phone\' cannot be found." />

I never get asked for credentials.

I think this has to do with what account Acronis is using to perform the backup with. If I knew that I could create a user for it.
The reason I believe this I can edit files and have full access to everything on Z:\ from computer B with all my other programs and only Acronis has issues with backing up files from Z:\, Acronis can browse to select the files which says it can read at least file names.

On the machine A, use Explorer to access the Z folder.  Right click on the folder and choose Properties then Security.  In the permissions add computer B.

I do not have the options for anything other than adding principals from computer A.

I would recommend that you clear the True Image credentials cache in Windows registry.  Doing that will force a credential logon prompt when setting up the backup in the application

Right click on Windows start button and select Run. Type regedit.  In the Windows Registry navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Acronis\Connections" .  Delet the key "Connections".  Close the Registry editor and any other apps runing and reboot your computer.  Attempt to run the the backup again but before you click Backup Now click on the destination and navigate to the Z drive folder location.  Somewhere in that process a logon prompt should be displayed where you can enter the proper credentials.

That did the trick I deleted the IP address of the server under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Acronis\Connections" and when I opened Acronis and selected the backup it wanted username and password, thanks!

Now if they would set it up to ask for credentials when they fail. :-)

Coming soon I think, the issue has been a sore spot!
