universal restore failure

I cannot seem to get the correct driver (I presume).  I keep getting the error  

Cannot find device driver pci\ven_8086&dev_9d2f&subsys_06b21028&rev_21 for windows 7.

I think I have the drivers I need from the Dell site for that laptop.  I am letting universal restore do an automatic search of the USB stick that I put the drivers on.  It is in a subfolder wiht other subfolders.  I do not know exactly what drivers to include so I have included more than I need.  If I new exactly what to put there I would put it at the root of the USB stick.

Any help is appreciated.

Most of the driver dwonloads from the manufacturer sites come in a compressed package or executable file.  To get the drivers form these the contents of the file need to be extracted from the download using a tool like 7zip.  Drivers are ususally in .inf, .sys, or oem format.

You might try booting the machine without using Universal Restore and see if Windows will boot, good chance it will, and if so, you can then apply the driver updates using Device Manager.

Thanks for the quick response.  My attempted boot after universal restore goes immediately to Dell SupportAssist.  Which says 'Hardware scan complete with no issue.  No bootable devices were found'.

There was only one drive that I was not able to extract.  The chipset driver came as an executable without a means of extracting it.

I went back and extracted the executable I mentioned with 7-zip.  It extracts to a bunch of files without extensions.

 

The driver identified in the error message is a USB 3.0 driver.  I think the reason foir the Dell Support Assist saying no boot device found is because your hard drive is not the first listed in the boot order in your machine bios.  Start your machine froma cold start and enter the bios using whatever key it is that allows you to do that, probably F12.  Navigate to the Boot section and set your hard drive to firist in the Boot Order list.  Save changes and exit the bios and see if it boots.  I think it will.

Overall what I am doing is trying to upgrade a Win7 laptop onto a new laptop.  I wonder if I need to change the boot mode to match that of the original laptop?

Yes you do.  It is very likely your Win 7 install booted in Legacy CSM mode.  Such an install would not boot in UEFI mode.  If possible to set the bios to Legacy mode only boot do so and see what happens.

How you boot the recovery media will also impact your restore.  For instance, if the orignal image was taken on a Legacy OS, not only does the new sytem need to be configured for legacy boot as well, but you also need to boot the Acronis recovery media in Legacy mode before the restore.  Like Windows installers, how you boot the installer/recovery media can determine how the install/recovery is created.  Use your new systems onetime boot or boot override menu to make sure you boot it in the same manner as the original OS install was made (legacy or UEFI). 

Enchantech and Bobbo_3C0X1 - Thank you for your help.  I was able to get this working.  I changed the bios to legacy and then installed a fresh copy of Win 7 on the laptop.  I did this to get rid of the GPT partition and make it MBR like the original machine.  I would have assumed that the Acronis whole drive restore would have replaced the GPT with the MBR of the source but I saw that it did not.  Then I did another restore and used universal to add drivers.   I now have a laptop the boots and I am aplying other drivers specific to the new hardware.  Thanks for the help.
