I am upgrading my 256 SSD to a 512 SSD (Samsung 850 Pro).

Should I do sector by sector or not?  I read on the forums that to keep restore points, you need to do a sector by sector.

Is there any downside to a sector by sector for a one time backup and restore?  I went ahead and created a backup and removed most the default exclusions and just left

hiberfile.sys
pagefile.sys
$Recycle.Bin
swapfile.sys
*.tip
*.tib.metadata

I chose sector by sector but did not choose backup unallocated space.

Is there any negative to doing it this way?  I will do the restore with sector by sector as well.

I just cloned a 500 gig Samsung EVO 850 SSD HD for my new Lenovo T450s with a 500 gig Sata drive.

I used Samsung's Migration software that was included with the drive.

IMO, if is is good enough for Samsung, since they a provide a three warranty with their drive, it would be good enough for me.

The process couldn't get any easier. 

I purchased Apricorn's Cloning Kit and used the Apricorn USB 3.0 supplied cable to connect the SSD to the laptop.  It took less than 10 minutes to clone the Lenovo factory image over to the Samsung SSD. Then I swapped HD's and it booted without error. 

But if you have your own external enclosure for a 2.5 SATA HD or a 2.5 dock you don't need the Apricorn kit. You can use either of those to connect the SSD to the laptop via a usb cable. Obviously if your source has USB 3.0 ports  and your 2.5 HD external enclosure has USB 3.0 capability the process will take much less time than USB 2.0.

The Samsung migration software tests for alignment on the SSD, Windows 7 sets trim.  You will have to manually disable defrag from Windows 7/10 after you boot with the SSD installed.

The supplied Samsung utility will let you tweak some additional things after you boot with the new SSD.  You install the utility supplied on the CD. It's almost identical to the utility that Intel supplies with their SSD HD's.
