Upgrading from True Image 2013 to True Image 2016

Thread needs solution

I've been using Acronis for years and will soon upgrade from WIN 7 to WIN 10. I purchased a license for my 3 computers and downloaded TI 2016.  Installation seemed to go well but when I attempted to do a backup after selecting the source and my external USB hard drive as destination (which I had always used with 2013) nothing happened when I clicked on the 'Backup Now' button.
The display did say 'Queued' which means nothing to me as I had not selected a delay.

Also, I can't find a backup list - where is it?  No mention of  how to get to the list in the user's guide.

System is WIN 7, SP1

Jerry, if you are seeing 'queued' then this suggests that Acronis thinks there is already an active backup task in the system, hence is queuing your next backup behind it!

Please look at the Acronis Scheduler Manager which has some tools to help with these situations.  Once you download the Scheduler Manager utility, just run this - there is nothing to install and each use is a one-off use.

When run, you will see a Command Prompt type window.

Type in Get list  in this windows and it will give you a list of all scheduled tasks.

Next, type in task zap  which will then remove all of the tasks in the listing.

You should now be able to run your new ATIH 2016 backup task.

If you still have any issues with using ATIH 2016, or it isn't showing you any of your backup tasks in the main task view, then you would be recommended to do a clean install of the software using the Acronis Cleanup Tool - link in my signature below.  Note: this will remove any other Acronis software you may have installed such as Disk Director.

I agree with Steve, you should first uninstall 2013, use the cleanup utility, reboot and then install 2016. For the upgrade process, you will need the 2013 license number and the 2016 license number. Both should be available from your Acronis.com account.

Also, start new backup tasks in empty directories. You can keep your older 2013 backup files as long as you wish, and even restore them with 2016 if you need to oned day.

Thanks for the information.  Using the scheduling manager worked to get rid of the queued tasks. After that the 'Backup Now' button worked properly and a new backup was created.  The only problem is that that 2016 backup file was twice the size of the 2013 backup file (50gb vs 25gb)!

The 2016 user interface is very different from that in TI 2013. The left column on the display seems to contain a list of backups though the only one I've created is the last one on the list. I hope that deleting the others will not affect the good one.

Seems to be that this stuff should have been described in the user manual though maybe I just missed seeing it.

Finally, I am not interested in incremental backups as I only do periodic full images. Is there an option somewhere on the 2016 display to turn off incremental backups?

Again, thanks for the great help!

Trying to install ver 16 in order to install a new wIN 10 system.  Says to deleate priou true imagre program.  Program is not listed in control panel.  Going to program files found true image file that says deleate but running it get themessage that it cannot find true image files.  How doyou get rid of a program then?

Download and run the cleanup utility https://kb.acronis.com/content/48668.

See Steve Smith's reply to me in this thread.  There is a cleanup program which, I think, will take care of deleting the old True image.

Thanks for your help, Pat.  In my case, upgrading and downloading from the Acronis site seems to have taken care of deleting TI 2013 without having to run the cleanup utility.  The backup file is in the same directory as my TI 2013 backups on my external drive.

The only problem that I seem to have is that Acronis says that my backup size was about 50gb but when I actually look at the file with file explorer it seems to be about the same size as it was in TI 2013 (25gb).

Hi Jerry, could you post a sceenshot of what Acronis is showing for the size (curious how it's displaying to you).  I believe that Acronis is reporting the estimated actual/expanded size vs the compressed .tib size that Windows explorer sees.

As requested, here are two screen shots.  The first one (AcronisScreen) is how the Acronis screen looks after doing the first backup of my system.  The second is a shot of the Explorer screen showing my backup image files. The first two files on the Explorer screen were created under Acronis 2013 while the third was done with Acronis 2016.

Note that the filesizes on the Explorer screen are roughly the same but the size reported on the Acronia screen is about twice the size.

Jerry, I think that the file size shown as Total size in the Acronis GUI is the total size of all your current backups created by this version, i.e. the sum of your two .TIB files shown in your Explorer window image.  I have seen this on my own systems where the total size has exceeded the actual size of the drive being backed up!

The only problem with that hypothesis is that the only backup file produced by TI 2016 is the third one.  The other two were both created under TI 2013. The reason that there are two so close in dates is that the second one was a 'security backup' under 2013 just before the upgrade to 2016.

Your idea must be close to correct.  I just did another backup (prior to going to WIN 10) and noticed that the total on the top of the Acronis screen is now 76gb, which must be the total of the three most recent backups.  Why Acronis chose to do this is beyond me.

Yes, you can open the "options" and change the backup scheme and/or the scheduling.

Jerry,  backup jobs are scanned and added by backup name.  Normally, you should not keep an old backup with a specific name and create a new backup to the same location with the same name. Acronis will see them as the same backup.  It's strange that you ended up with a backup file that ends in 1-3 when there is no 1-2.  However, the reason for the 1-3 is because "1" was already showing up in that folder.  Backup file names are on track again as of 5/27, but this is why it is including the size of the original backup as well - because it has the same name and is in the same folder.

Thanks for the information.  I had no idea that Acronis didn't handle this sort of thing by itself.  Seems odd to me as my backups are always 'full' images. I never had this sort of problem with Acronis 2013 but, maybe, I never did two backups in one day. (I also liked the old interface better than the 2016 one)

Yes, I knew that but, with Acronis 2013, backup type occasionally returned to 'Incremental' seemingly on its own hook!

I was quite satisfied with Acronis 2013 but was concerned that it probably would no longer work when I upgraded to WIN 10. (So far, I have tried four times to upgrade but each upgrade has failed even though I did the 'upgrade' a bit differently in each case.)

If you have problem with upgrading, follow Steve's recommendations to uninstall 2013, clean-up etc. Then install 2016 and start new backup tasks. That should work.
