Using the recovery USB on Dell Venue 8 Pro

Thread needs solution

I can boot to the USB drive and it looks fine. But when I try to use backup or restore, I can't see my internal drives. I can only see connected USB drives. Booting on my desktop with the same USB key, I can see all my hard drives.

David, there can be a number of reasons why you can't see your drives when booted from the USB memory stick with Acronis Rescue Media.

If you are using the standard Linux based rescue media, this may not have device drivers for the hard drives in your system - this is very common.

You may have very new types of drives, in particular new SSD drives that currently require that you use the WindowsPE Rescue Media - again this is common in the forum.

One other reason is the method by which you are booting from USB which should match how you boot normally into Windows, i.e. if for Windows your system uses UEFI to boot, then when selecting to boot from your USB drive, you should also select UEFI mode to boot, not Legacy if also offered.

I would recommend using the Acronis Rescue Media Builder to create the WinPE Rescue Media - this will prompt you if you don't have any required components, i.e. Acronis Media addons and Windows ADK software - just follow the download links offered by the Media Builder, install the new software then continue to build the rescue media on either your USB stick or on CD/DVD.
