Waking from sleep mode randomly (Schedule12.exe AcrSch2Svc)

Thread needs solution

This just started to happen about a week or so ago...

Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) will now randomly wake itself from sleep mode and then go back to sleep about a minute or two later. It doesn't matter what time of the day or night and it seems to be completely random. It can happen several times within one hour!

I only have two backups set to start daily at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM via Acronis True Image 2016. The computer will wake from sleep mode and perform these backups and then go back to sleep after each is completed. The only other wake timer set is via Windows Task Scheduler to wake the computer at 12:29 AM each night to perform scheduled scans (antivirus, malware, etc.). All of these timers work properly.

When I use the "powercfg -lastwake" command from the Command Prompt (Run as Administrator) it shows Acronis as the culprit (see attached screenshot - WakeTimers 1.jpg). Notice the "expires at" date and time for the Acronis event.

Now, look at the second attached screenshot, WakeTimers 2.jpg. Notice the new "expires at" date and time for the Acronis event now that the previous event's expiration time has passed.

It looks as though Acronis is creating endless wake timers!

Also, notice how the "expires at" does not change for the Task Sceduler event I created for my daily antivirus, malware, etc. scans (compare the two screenshots to each other and notice how that event's time does not change as the Acronis one does). It only creates a new event AFTER the scheduled one expires, which is how it should work.

How can I resolve this?

Thank you in advance.

Bill, you may want to try using the Acronis Scheduler Manager with the get list option to check that you have no other scheduled Acronis tasks that you are unaware of for any reason.

Hmm, just a guess here but looks like somehow the Acronis task is being triggered by the Wakeup Scan event in the screenshots you provide.  More puzzling is your statement that this wake/sleep behavior occurs at random several times a day.

I would suggest running a repair on the install first to see if that may help.  Open Control Panel and look for Programs - Uninstall a Program.  Select that and locate Acronis True Image in the resulting list.  Select that entry and choose Uninstall/Change.  A menu will appear that will allow you ro run the Repair function.

After completing that step reboot the computer and see if the problems persists.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I grabbed the tool and ran the *get list* command. There were ten tasks listed for some crazy reason. I only have two tasks that I want scheduled each day. I ran the *task zap* command and cleared them all.

I'll see what happens now...

Thank you for the response.

This behavior only started recently. The Windows task for waking the computer for scans has been in place for months and Acronis was not affected by it during that entire time.

I tried the *task zap* as described in the previous post and will see how that goes before reinstalling/repairing Actronis. If my current step doesn't work then I will have to try your suggestion next. :)

Have a look at your Backup Task list in the application GUI, are there any tasks showing now that you Zapped all the tasks?  If not you  will have to recreate the tasks again that you had before.  This will require that add back the existing backups into the GUI interface and then Reconfigure the task options so that the backup works as before.

The two backup tasks were still listed in Acronis, but they were no longer scheduled and the Notification options were reset to being off. I rescheduled both tasks and the notification options and now the *get list* command retuirns this (see attached screenshot).

Ok, see how it works now.  Looks to me like the timers are set to run as intended.

I'll post again tomorrow or Monday after the overnight scan timer and the next day's Acronis timers fire (and hopefully no more random sleep mode awakenings).

Thank you to Steve Smith and Enchantech for your help. My problem has been resolved. :)

Your welcome

Can anyone help me fix this related issue?

I just did a fresh reinstall of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit (hard drive format). I have only the Windows updates and motherboard drivers installed along with a few games for testing purposes. Acronis is not yet installed on the new system.

My issues are:

The computer randomly woke itself up out of sleep mode, but not due to anything Acronis related.

When I went into a Command Prompt and typed this command powercfg -lastwake I got this:

Instance Path: USB\ROOT_HUB20\4&2bf71d89&0

Description: USB Root Hub

Additionally, if I try to save a file that I am downloading via Firefox to the root of my C: drive, it won't allow me and gives the error stating "You don't have permission to save to this location. Contact the system administrator to obtain permission". Then it prompts me to save in the Downloads dir that Windows created upon installation. However, if I just copy a file  from out on the desktop via Windows Explorer (Directory Opus is what I actually use), then it works fine, other than I have to click the prompt saying I have to give Administrator permission.

I am the Administrator of this computer via my user account, so I don't understand why I am being blocked.

Thank you for any help you may be able to offer.

Bill, your random wake issue on the clean Win 7 install would look to be one of your USB devices triggering this.  Try disconnecting everything that isn't essential such as keyboard / mouse and see if the issue continues.

The write access to the root of your C:\ OS drive is something I have seen at different times and seems (to me) to be a security feature of Windows to try to protect the same.  I personally do not put anything to C:\ root folder - I tend to create another partition on the same drive and use this for any user data etc, including downloads etc.  Part of the issue you are seeing may be the authority that your Firefox is running under - you could test this by trying to start Firefox using 'Run as Administrator'.

I since figured out the Sleep issue. I went to Device Manager and selected my networking card. I unchecked everything except Wake on Magic Packet. Now it stops coming out of Sleep for no reason.

Yes, I usually have everything on my separate Date drive to save to. On the clean install, I only had the boot drive hooked up. It just irks me that I am the Admin but I have to have permission from the admin! :)

Bill, glad to hear you have figured out the device causing the computer to stop sleeping - thanks for giving this feedback.
