What files need updating??

Thread needs solution

Greetings, all...

I have never been clear about this, so perhaps someone can clairify for me!

I know the install file (.exe) and the bootable media file (.ISO) are updated by the new build and should be download/installed. Question is, do the Universal Restore and/or the WinPE build files get altered by the new build and therefore need to downloaded and replaced? Their file names do not reference a build number as do the install and WinPE files!

Thanks ... Robert

1) With the latest version of ATIH 2016 (v6559), the media builder (tool needed to create WinPE) is now included.  You no longer need to install this separately with this version.  Prior to this version, if you wanted to create WinPE, you would have to install the media builder add-on and should grab the one from your online account to make sure you had the latest.  I still see the OLD add-on in my account, but don't install it if you have moved up to 6559 now as it's not needed.  For reference, the last build of media builder (if using a version of ATIH 2016 prior to the most current release) will be:

              Latest Build: #6027 (Size: 324.14 MB2015-12-02
              MD5: b310407ca4ac34787a88b2ea0653f4cd

If you have this version or an earlier one installed, you can check the version in control panel >>> programs and features

2) As for creating WinPE, Acronis relies on Microsoft Windows ADK to build the media.  At this point in time, the ADK is not included and needs to be manually installed.  Typically, if you have ADK installed already, Acronis will use what's installed.  If no ADK is installed, it will point you to the links to download them.  Personally, I download the ADK seperately to ensure I have the latest version though.  If you're not sure what ADK you have installed, the version will show up in control panel.  Or, you can go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\ and see what is there.  FYI, the version of ADK installed on your system does not have to match your OS.  You can build Win10PE with Win10ADK on a Windows 7/8/8.1/10 machines.  Win10 ADK gives you the best compatibility with hardware for new systems, so I would recommend using it if you build WinPE for Acronis.

3) Universal Restore does not update automatically at thist time.  I hope they will include it in the updated installer down the road too - makes sense (to me) to do this.  There was no update to Universal Restore with the release of Acronis 2016 v6559.  UR latest version is in your account downloads and the most recent is:

               Latest Build: #6027 (Size: 324.14 MB2015-12-02
               MD5: b310407ca4ac34787a88b2ea0653f4cd

For whatever reason, this shows up in control panel >>> programs and features >>>> as version 11.5.40010

4) FYI, as of this build, the default bootable media has a much needed overhaul of driver support.  It is likely you will not need to create WinPE bootable recovery media in most cases now.  However, if you do have a unique storage controller, WinPE may still be the way to go.  However, hard drives, and NICs (even the newest ones like the NVME PCIE SSD drives like the Samsung 950 Pro or 951 OEM, eMMC Flash hard drives, and latest intel Nics seem to be working with the default Linux bootable recovery media.

Bobbo.....

Thanks for the reply, and sorry for the delay in responding back -- I have been away for a few days.

I'm thinking the release notes would have helped clairify all this, and I should have gone there earlier, but have had trouble finding time to get into this!

Thanks again .... Robert
