Wrong password

Thread needs solution

I have a weird problem. I used True Image to backup my complete PC. I set a password, but during recovery it saýs it is wrong. But it's definetely not. Anyone else knows this case? I cannot use my PC because of stupid Windows build 1703.

Henja, it is very doubtful that anyone, including Acronis, can help you if you do not have the correct password which was used to encrypt your backup image.

Assuming that you have another computer where you can access the encrypted backup image file (.TIB) then you have a couple of options you can try.

Boot the second computer using your Acronis Rescue Media with the backup drive holding your .TIB file connected, then try to access the backup in that way.  You will still be prompted to provide the correct password, but you can try different variations on what you believe that password to be, i.e. try using capitals or lower-case in case you had Caps Lock on when you set the password.  Passwords are case sensitive so you need to match it fully letter by letter.

The second option is to do the same test / trial passwords by attempting to explore or mount the .TIB image from a second computer which has Acronis True Image installed with its shell integration.  You can double-click on the .TIB file to try to open/explore the file contents or right-click to take the option to Mount the image.

In addition to the suggestions made by Steve, check to make sure that the language and keyboard settings are the same as when you set the password. For example, there are differences in key assignments for US English and UK English keyboard layouts. I had problems when I upgraded to Windows 8 as the language and keyboard settings were for UK English whereas the defaults in Australia are US English Keyboard and Australian English for language.

Hope this is of assistance

Ian

Thank you Steve! Yet I've tried many combinations and all were wrong. To me it seems like a bug since I set the password a day before and I've had the same problem with a different backup. Too bad I don't have a second computer to access the files! I guess I'll have to start with file number 1!?

Unfortunately there is very little anyone can do if the password is wrong or forgotten etc unless you have another backup which is not password encrypted?

It appears that everything was working well until I upgraded to the 2018 Version - Build 9202. Now, I find that the passwords for all of my past archives appear to be wrong. The secure zone password -- which is identical to my archive password is wrong.

However, using the ASZ tools, you can answer your secure question and change that password. I changed it to my old password and tested it -- everything was OK.

This leads me to believe that it is an Acronis issue and has to do with the way the confirmation password is tested or stored.

I used my previous rescue disk to check the old password and there is no issue.

The solution is to wait until Acronis posts a fix and use your older software version.

<<UPDATE: THE THIRD RELOAD WITHOUT ANTI-VIRUS WAS A CHARM:

IT MAY NOT BE AN ACRONIS PROBLEM.

I KEPT TINKERING WITH MY SYSTEM AND FOUND THAT MY ANTIVIRUS DID NOT LIKE A PARTICULAR PROGRAM COMPONENT AND STUCK IT IN QUARANTINE ... WHICH SUGGESTS THAT YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE YOUR ANTI-VIRUS AND ANTI-MALWARE PROGRAMS ARE OFF OR SUSPENDED DURING INSTALL>>

All is well.

Stephen, thanks for giving your update / feedback - glad that you have got your data back and resolved the password issue.  Antivirus / security programs can be a cause of some strange issues when they decide they don't like something!
