2017 NG 6116 - Advanced options - new "snapshot for backup" method

Thread needs solution

Hopefully we can get some clarification on this new feature - it is currently not documented.  Under the advanced options tab, there is a "snapshot for backup" method that is new to 2017 NG 6116.

No Snapshot

VSS (default)

Acronis Snapshot

VSS without writers

1) What should most people use and when/why would you want to use one of the other methods.

2) Are there pro's / cons for picking one over the other?

3) Will any of these settings make a difference in the Clone process (if started from Windows), or does it only apply to the backup method?

Very good questions. I was curious about this during beta testing but never got around to asking. Holiday season and beta testing do not go well together in my part of the world. Summer holiday season!

I would say that these options are intended to remove the need to modify the use_vss=true or false line in the task script .TIS file by making this a user configuration option in the Advanced tab and may also help diagnose some types of VSS issue, i.e. have 2 such options to choose from to identify if this is a VSS writer issue or not.

I haven't tried a Clone from within Windows with NG but would have thought that they would have made a note of such a change if were removing the need to reboot into the Acronis recovery environment to proceed with the Clone, so doubt that these settings will alter that requirement by performing the Clone in a similar way to doing a Backup using VSS within Windows.

I would think that the VSS options now available within the Backup Options are there to provide some granualrity to using the VSS.  The one that I find most interesting is the No Snapshot option.  That implies that a snapshot method of backup creation is not used and in that case the system would need to have all open files closed before backup operation begins and/or backup in a cresh consistent state as it is known.  If not then I might suspect that selecting this option might ivoke a reboot of the system into another environment so that the source disk containing the data is taken offline to complete the backup task.

Below are links worth the read on this subject and I would encourage all to give them a study:

Hello Everyone!

We've published an article that provides more details on the new snapshot options 59440: Acronis True Image 2017: 'Snapshot for backup' option overview.

Many thanks!
