Acronis Active Protection will not stay off after a Restart

Thread needs solution

I turned this feature off, but when I restart my computer it  turns on again. I want it off permanently because it uses all of the CPU.

This is the first report I have seen of this happening. I suggest you contact Acronis technical support - live chat may be the best way of dealing with the problem.

Hello Rebecca,

As Ian suggested, please submit a support ticket so that we could investigate the issue.

Of course, you can change the Startup type of Acronis Active Protection service to Disabled in Windows Services window, but that way we would not be able to fix the issue properly for you in the future updates.

Regards,

Slava

Rebecca, I had almost the opposite experience with Active Protection which was solved by setting the Acronis Active Protection service to run as Automatic (Delayed Start) instead of just being Automatic.  Changing this service then allowed me to have control over whether Active Protection was started or not.

There's definitely an issue with version 6116 regarding Active Protection.

No matter what I do (turn it on or off) the Active Protection shield icon remains in the taskbar - it must be a bug.

Dave, the system tray icon is present regardless of whether you have Active Protection turned on or off, as it offers other options related to the main product as well as AP.  See screen shot attached.  I believe that this is intended behaviour for the New Generation product.

It can be disabled permanently and removed from the tray. After disabling in Acronis, go to computer management and stop and DISABLE the service there too.  Then go to Windows settings and remove it from the tray there.  You won't see it there anymore.

How do you turn it of in Acronis?  I have searched everything I can see and can't find the option

Beresford, welcome to these User Forums.

Start by right-clicking on the AAP icon in the System Tray if this is visible, then you will see the top option to Turn off Acronis Active Protection

If you don't see the AAP icon in the System Tray area, open the main ATIH 2017 GUI and open the Active Protection page through the application to turn off this function.

Once you have done the above, then open the Services.msc control panel and change the Acronis Active Protection Service to be Disabled.

Latest 2018 build and this Active protection issue is worse.

I had it disabled, the icon in the tray was greyed out, it said it was turned off but of course the service was still running ... so I stopped the service manually.

However, after the latest SW update, the service has been set to run automatically again!

Unbelievable.

Not only that, if I stop the service, I now get a pop-up warning me that it's been stopped and that it will be restarted automatically if the situation persists!!!

Why do you insist on forcing me to have this Acronis?  Why doesn't "NO" mean "NO" ??

Mark, welcome to these User Forums.

You should first Turn off AAP via the system tray icon, then open the Services.msc control panel and set the AAP Service to Disabled after stopping it.  This should then remain disabled unless a new build / update is installed which will reset these settings.

Please either use the Feedback tool in the GUI or open a Support Case directly with Acronis if you are still unhappy with the way this feature works.

Well thanks for the welcome, however, I've been using Acronis for many years.

For some reason it thinks I'm a new user cos I needed to change my email address.

It was originally turned off by myself as soon as the feature appeared.

It was turned off from within the main program's "active protection" menu, and then also via the system tray when I noticed the afore mentioned option had no effect.  The service was then disabled when it became evident that the system tray option also had no effect.

This was all relayed to Acronis a very long time ago and they've basically done nothing except seemingly make it worse.

The new build decided to "remember" the program and system tray settings (which as I already mentioned were off) but sneakily start up the service again …. plus now there's that warning that AAP will be restarted because I turned the option off which would seem to make it not an option really.  Why do they want to make it so difficult to turn off??

Beginning to get very cheesed off with Acronis ... I've now been waiting 3 months for an answer as to why TI 2018 recovery disks can't even see my external USB backup drive (no such issue with 2016 and prior incarnations) … but that's off topic.

Regards

Mark

Mark, another option that is available to you to use can be found via the Useful Links > MVP User Tools and Tutorials link here in the forum, which will take you to a Google Drive page with a selection of scripts that can automate the process of starting / stopping / disabling Acronis Services, including AAP.
