Acronis backup not working

Thread needs solution

My true image 2017 stopped working just after you start the backup. This just started, had no problem before. I read if you disable volume shadow copy in windows services it will fix it. I did that and it works. I don't want to do it because that's not how you should make it work.

Does anyone have the fix or a way to make it work right.

thanks

Jack, it sounds like you have a local VSS issue on the system.  Stopping the VSS service will result in Acronis falling back to the proprietary snapapi backup method which used to be the primary method in 2014 and earlier versions.

Did you upgrade from a previous version to 2017 recently?  if so, what was the earlier version - if it was 2014 or earlier, it never used VSS so you may not have ever noticed an existing problem.

VSS can get dorked up from Windows updates/upgrades, malware, or who knows what - it's actually fairly common as only those using backup software may notice it if/when it does happen.  I don't like to post competitor links, but am doing so here... NOT TO REFERENCE a different alternative, but to show that all backup software relies on VSS and some possible ways to try and fix it as no backup product will work reliably if it uses VSS and the VSS service is having issues.

I just found this first one today.  I had never seen it Googling for VSS fixes before, but plan to follow-up with Acronis support engineers to ask more about this.  I've been backing up with Acronis since 2015 and have never had a VSS on any of my systems, I will take this one with a grain of salt, but as you are experiencing it, might have some truth in your situation (then again, maybe not).  I don't know if removing that registry key would be good or not - might want to double check with Acronis via a support session as well and ask for them to run it by a developer to verify.

A Note to Ex-Acronis Users (or Other Backup Tools)

The following article describes a common error caused by “Acronis” software and other backup tools that install VSS providers:

Hi Bobbo,

I have had 2017 when it first came out. I uninstalled 2016 and installed 2017. I just did a backup on Wednesday and it worked ok. I haven't installed anything new to my desktop. thanks for the reply, I am going to put 2016 back on and see it it works. will let you know

Jack,

It is also a very good idea that you perform a cold start of Windows from time to time which will often solve issues like those with VSS hanging.

If you are using Windows 10 you can do a cold start by selecting Restart from the Power Options menu.

If you are using Windows 7, 8, 8.1 you can do a cold start by selecting Shutdown from the Power Options menu.

If you use you PC everyday I would recommend you do the above at least once a week.

Enchantech,

I uninstall 2017 and ran the clean utility since I had 2016 before I bought 2017. I installed 2017 and got the same problem. I went into power option  but I could not find any cold restart from there, I am running win 10.

Thanks for the reply.

It is not named Cold Restart.  What you are looking for is the entry Restart.  Windows, when closed, will sometimes fail to properly close a VSS instance and upon starting the system again that instance will result in a hung state which causes the VSS service to malfunction.  In Windows 10 the Restart option helps to close out VSS - end it properly- so that you do not have a hung instance.  The Shutdown option in Windows 10 may not end things properly due to hibernation sleep states.

This does not always work but it is definately one of the first things a user should try when looking to resolve VSS issues.

Enchantech,

I went in power options in the control panel of win 10 and I don't see any signs of a restart option, am I missing something here.

Thanks

Jack, this is not a control panel power option, but simply the normal shutdown or restart or hibernate etc set of options - choose restart in order to avoid going into a Windows 10 hybrid sleep (aka hibernation) state when doing a shutdown.  Windows 10 (and 8.1 before it) implemented a 'Fast Start' option which does this hybrid sleep shutdown in order to produce a faster startup where it just resumes from the hibernated state instead of doing a full startup.  Doing a restart forces a full startup, i.e. a 'cold' start.

Steve is correct.  Click Windows start button, click Power button, select restart.

Even without the Fast Startup aspect on Windows 8.1 and 10 you cannot completely shutdown a PC with either Windows OS by simply selecting Shutdown.  It is necessary to select Restart to achieve a complete shutdown and subsequent restart.

Thanks guys,

I did a restart from the start button at the bottom left, sorry to say it did the same. I then went to the vss and disabled it and rebooted and it works like it should, but the services is disabled. Maybe it will work right after the election. :)

thanks again
