Acronis boot disk problem.

Thread needs solution

I recently got a new "MyBook" 6TB external drive to use as a destination with Acronis True Image Home backup. It is is formatted as one 6TB partition. Previously, I was using a 2TB "MyBook 3", which was also formatted a single partition.

Now, the problem. My Acronis recovery disk cannot find any backups on the 6TB drive. It shows the drive as "Local Disk I" instead of "MyBook I", and when I click on local disk, Acronis says there are no backups there. If I plug in both the 2TB & the 6TB drives at the same time, the recovery disk shows the 2TB drive as "MyBook J" and is able to read all the backups on it, but the 6TB "I" drive still shows as empty.

Windows 7 64 bit recognizes both drives as "MyBook", and is able to read backups on both. TIH program in Windows also is able to find and work with all backups on the 6TB drive. It is just when I boot into Acronis TIH with the recovery disk that I have this problem.

Are 6TB drives not readable from a boot disk? If so, what is the largest partion that is?

jetjock, what version of ATIH boot disk are you using here?

Is this ATIH 2017 as for this forum, or is it another version?

Which type of boot disk have you created?  Is this the standard, Linux OS media, or is it the Windows PE version?

As far as I am aware, there should be no issue with the ATIH 2017 Rescue Media seeing your WD My Book 6TB drive correctly if your Windows 7 OS can do so.

I'm using 2017 and the rescue disk is the standard. It has both 32 & 64 bit Windows and Universal Restore on it.

I think someone in "My Digital Life" just may have pointed me in the right direction by asking how the boot disk was formatted. When I looked, I saw that it was "CDFS" & the new drive is formatted as "GB exFAT" which I think is the problem. My old drive was "GB NTFS". Noy sure if a 6TB drive can be formatted as NTFS, but will look it up.

jetjock, thanks for the update, yes, exFAT is the issue here, so you will need to format the 6TB drive as NTFS while keeping the GPT partitioning scheme for ATIH to be able to see it correctly.

CDFS is correct for boot media on optical media, i.e CD or DVD.
UBS boot media should use FAT32 (not NTFS) and you need GPT for drives of over 2TB capacity.

jetjock,

Your 6TB drive would be an advanced format drive with 4k sector size.  Your 2TB drive differs in that it has a 512 byte sector size.  Acronis prodiucts have supported the Advanced Format drives for several version now.  Having said that it does sound like your boot media does not recognize the drive correctly so this is of concern.

As Steve says what version of the product are you using?  A version 2015 or newer should have no problem with the drive.  If your version of these products is not functioning correctly with the drive you will need to open a support ticket with Acronis for resolution.

Steve & Enchantech,

Thanks for the help. Looks like a reformat is in the works. Will post back here & let everyone know the outcome.

Yes, a format to GPT should correct the issue.

Reformatted to NTFS and backed up two drives. Boot disk is now able to read back-ups fine from My Book drive. Thanks again.

That is great to hear, thanks for giving the feedback.
