Acronis True Image 2017 backup to remote Synology NAS

Thread needs solution

Is it possible to remotely backup to a Synololgy NAS that is outside the local network?  Didn't see a built in feature for easily selecting/connecting to a Synology NAS as a backup destination while outside the network.  I know Acronis is known as a supported backup software with Synology.

Thanks for any input!

Welcome to these user forums.

Technically, if you know the external IP address of the remote Synology NAS then you should be able to specify this as the destination address for the backup, assuming that any firewalls protecting the NAS will allow access.

On the home network, typically Acronis access a NAS through WIndows Networking.

The solution for you is to use the FTP server feature of the Synology. You will have to enable FTP on the Synology, for the right user, also turn on DDNS (either through Synology or your preferred DDNS provider), finally enable FTP through the NAS firewall. You will also have to enable port forwarding on your router so that traffic pointing at the FTP port to YOURNAS.Synology.me, for example points internally to your local NAS ftp port.

As you do the set up, I'd recommend you use a Windows based FTP client (you have several free ones), to you do your testing. When you are able to upload, download, delete files successfully on your FTP server, then try with Acronis.
