Acronis True Image 2017 makes full use of CPU

Thread needs solution

I have a AMD Ryzen 7 1700X. While Acronis True Image was backing up I was glad to see that it uses all 16 threads (8 cores + hyperthreading). The CPU usage ranged from 5-20% and varied by core and varied with time. It used 4.5GB of my 16GB of RAM.

Edward, thanks for posting your findings.

The ATIH 2017 User Guide: Performance of backup operation deals with the settings in this area, with the Operation priority option.

True Image 2017 is multi-threaded to take advantage of all available CPU cores as you found out.  It can also make the most use of the rest of your hardware.  So If you have SSD drives then those drives will be used by the app to the highest level possible given the rest of your hardware.

Caution here is that if you have high end hardware and are running drives such as the PCIe based SSD's you can actually max out CPU usage to 100% during backups.  This will in turn lead to the computer becoming sluggish or even uable to perform other tasks while the backup is running.  The upside is that backups tend to be quite fast in this scenario so waiting for a backup to complete when run on fast hardware is easy enough for most users.
