Backup after updating from Windows 1511 to 1607 takes an extremely long time to complete

Thread needs solution

Description: Before updating to Windows 1607 from 1511, running a backup was painless and very streamline. A typical incremental backup would run, of the entire SSD, within 15 to 20 minutes; a full backup would run around 1.25 minutes. The SSD is an Intel 750 series with the capacity of 400Gb. Backups usually would run from anywhere to 15 minutes to 20, depending on the situation at the time of the backup. For an example, each month, a new backup would be created, thus causing the backup to run a little longer due to running a FULL backup event. This backup would run anywhere from an hour to 1.25 hr. Then after that, by default, the remaining backups would take typically from 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

Problem. After updating the system OS from 1511 to 1607, a new backup was created. After initiating the backup sequence, I did not pay attention to what the remaining time would be, thinking there is no need because in the past, backups were relatively fast. However, I do know the time the backup process started which was at 2300 hrs. During the evening hours, the backup should have completed, but this morning, when the backup process was observed, the process only had backed up 90Gb and that was at 0530 hrs. At the time of this writing, the backup has completed 103Gb, 41 minutes later.

Requests: Is there an issue with Windows 1607 with slow backups? Are there other suggestions that I could perform to increase the backup times?

After thoughts: At this point, since I am not settled in with Windows 10 1607, if there is no resolution for a dead slow backup, I will consider reverting back to 1511.

Thanks for your comments and support.

wvl, there are lots of users with Windows 10 Anniversary Update (1607), myself included, who are not seeing any such performance problems, so I doubt that this alone is the root cause of the issue you are reporting.

I would recommend using the MVP Log Viewer (link below) and checking the backup task log(s) to see if they are showing any messages that may shed more light on why your backup took such an extended time.

The current focus is on the latest Windows 10 Creators Update which is currently in the process of being rolled out but which we have seen reports of issues from early adopters which led to Acronis releasing updates for both ATIH 2016 and 2017 for problems caused by the new 'God Mode' folder this update was placing on the Windows desktop.

After checking the logs, try doing a full shutdown / restart (without using Windows Fast Start aka Hybrid Sleep) then retry the backup to see if that makes a difference?
