Backup bringt Fehlermeldungen wie “It may be blocked by another application”

Thread needs solution

Seit einiger Zeit erhalte ich bei Backups mit Acronis Trueimage 2017 Fehlermeldungen wie „It may be blocked by another application“ oder „Failed to back up file folder C:\Users\xxxxxx….”, obwohl keine andere Anwendung läuft oder kein Ordner bearbeitet wird.

Wolfgang, what exactly are you making a backup of here?  Does this include any OneDrive folders?

See KB 61362: Acronis True Image: Fehler beim Sichern von Microsoft Onedrive Ordner which will also apply to ATI 2017 and earlier versions.

I have OneDrive ist uninstalled.

Hallo,

hat keiner einen Tip für mich?

ich komme einfach nicht weiter.

Wolfgang, please download & use the MVP Log Viewer tool to obtain the full log details for this problem backup task, this may help show more information?  Link in my signature (no install is needed for the Log Viewer).

Im Anhang ein Logfile, der hoffentlich weiterhilft.

Wolfgang, thank you for the log file information, this shows that there is a problem with a specific file "Erneuerung Patientenverfügung Hilde 2017.jpg" which is located in your "C:\Users\Winfried Masuch\Documents\Eigene Dateien\HILDE\" folder being backed up.

The actual error is being generated for the copy of the file being accessed in the VSS snapshot data store area.

Failed to back up file or folder 'C:\Users\Winfried Masuch\Documents\Eigene Dateien\HILDE\'.
It may be blocked by another application.
path = "\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy4\Users\Winfried Masuch\Documents\Eigene Dateien\HILDE\Erneuerung Patientenverfügung Hilde 2017.jpg",

When I have encountered this type of error on my own computer, it has been caused by my antivirus (or other security software) identifying the file as being malware and blocking access to it.

I would recommend checking your security software logs to see if there are entries there that match when the error is given?

Hallo,

thank you for your effort, my active security software is Bitdefender.
During the review, I could not find anything unusual there, no blocked malware Files.
I can not find the path with "HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy4" on my PC.

Wolfgang, the path \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy4\ is a hidden / system path created during the Microsoft VSS snapshot process where it is capturing a copy of your C:\Users\Winfried Masuch\Documents\Eigene Dateien\HILDE\ folder content to include in the backup image.

One option here would be to test your backup after deselecting the C:\Users\Winfried Masuch\Documents\Eigene Dateien\HILDE\ folder from your backup task then see if you still see the same error message.

An alternative approach is to change the snapshot method used by the task from using VSS to using the older Acronis snapshot method as was the default in older versions of ATI.

See KB 59440: Acronis True Image 2017: 'Snapshot for backup' option overview -59440: Acronis True Image 2017: "Snapshot für Backup-Option Übersicht - for details of changing the snapshot method.

Hallo Steve,

if I remove the file "Hilde" in the selection for the backup, the backup works fine. What should be done then?

Gruß Wolfgang

Wolfgang, try making a backup of only the Hilde folder on its own.

Hallo Steve,

I made, in the appendix you will find the error message

Wolfgang, check the log for the detailed messages for this backup and see if this is still the same image file ( Erneuerung Patientenverfügung Hilde 2017.jpg ) that is causing the error, as it was with the earlier log?  If it is, then move that single JPG file to another location, and try the backup again.

Hello Steve,
I have moved the file (
Erneuerung Patientenverfügung Hilde 2017.jpg) to the folder "old documents". After a backup, the error message appears in the appendix. The associated log file is also attached.
Greeting Wolfgang

Wolfgang, it looks like you have another copy of the same JPG image in a different folder as per the error message in the new log:

2019-02-02 20:01:36:521 12600 E0004000C: Failed to back up file or folder 'C:\Users\Winfried Masuch\Documents\Eigene Dateien\alte Dokumente\'. It may be blocked by another application.
Die Datei ist read-only. (0x4000C)
    function = "OpenFileW",
    path = "\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy13\Users\Winfried Masuch\Documents\Eigene Dateien\alte Dokumente\Erneuerung Patientenverfügung Hilde 2017.jpg",

So the new problem image is:  C:\Users\Winfried Masuch\Documents\Eigene Dateien\alte Dokumente\Erneuerung Patientenverfügung Hilde 2017.jpg

Hello Steve,
I'll take another look at it tomorrow and come back to you.
First of all, thank you
wolfgang

Hello Steve,

I have converted the file "Erneuerung Patientenverfügung Hilde 2017.jpg" into a PDF-file and now the backup is o.k.. I hope it stays that way.

Thanks again

Wolfgang

Wolfgang, that is good to hear, thank you for the feedback.
