Backup consistently hangs at about 50%

Thread needs solution

Windows 10 Anniversay edition, backup up an SSD to a HD drive.

Sorry to be so wordy - I'm trying to give enough information to be useful to anyone who reads this.

I previously owned Acronis True Image 2015. The last time my weekly backup tried to run, for some reason instead of creating the differential, it kept restarting over and over until my backup drive was filled.

Meanwhile, I bought the upgrade to True Image 2017, but didn't install it right away.

Last night the schedule backup did not run at all. Odd, it always had. Maybe related to why the previous backup failed. I opened TI 2015 and all of my backup schemes were gone. OK.

Well I guess I will install TI 2017 I just bought. But since TI 2015 was now acting flakey I uninstalled it first.

I then installed TI 2017. Had a little trouble getting it to let me add a backup (in that, it wouldn't let me). But then I figured it wanted me to redefine the default backup. So I defined my backup of C: to a folder in D:, Differential scheme.  No existing backups in the D: folder.

Backup starts. CPU usage 100%, but I figure that is because I have compression at Max.

Backup stops about 50% through (50% according to the hover over the icon in the notification bar) . The CPU drops, no further activity in the UI. I hit "Stop", nothing happens. I exit the UI and reboot.

Upon restart, it immediately resumes the backup even though I do not have the setting set to backup on restart. OK, well I'll let it run this time.

100% CPU, gets to about 50% again, CPU drops to nothing. No activity in UI anymore. Same as before, "Stop", doesn't stop, reboot.

This time right away I told it to stop, and it did, but then it says it will retry in one minute, then it starts going again. And again hung at about 50%. I let it sit for an hour to see if it would wake up, it did not.

I'd like to know what the heck is going on. For one thing, I can't seem to use my computer anymore because it keeps trying to restart the failed backup and using 100% CPU to do so (and I have priority set to Low). I guess I will have to try to kill all these Acronis processes to actually do any work, and then uninstall it.

Second, why can't it complete a backup? There are no errors displayed, no errors in system Event Viewer, plenty of room on destination drive.

I've looked around in C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Logs but I can't find anything useful there.

This is very disappointing - until it flaked out last week I've not had major problems with TI 2015. Before that I had TI 2011 and have been using True Image for probably 10 years.

It looks like I should try to get my money back while I can. It doesn't get much simpler that the kind of backup I'm trying to do!

It is possible that there are some remanents of ATI 2015 that were not removed by the installation of ATI 2017. However, I cannont work out why that would cause the problem you are seeing.

A couple of ideas: Try to a repair installation of ATI 2017 (run the installation file and you will be asked if you want to repair your ATI 2017 installation). If that does not work, unistall ATI 2017 and run the clean-up tool (which will remove all traces of ATI 2017, including backup specifications). You can find out about the cleanup tool https://kb.acronis.com/aticleanup

Hope this helps: I am sure other suggestions will be forthcoming (although as it is the holiday season it may take a few hours).

This may not help but one thought I had was, your antivirus might be interfering. You can rightclick on the taskbar and select 'TaskManager' to see the processes running and the CPU percentage they are using up. Better, you can d/l Process Explorer here and use that app for more detail.

Since you're starting from a potentially corrupted 2015 upgrade, I would also go full cleanup and fresh install.  To take the cleanup a step further and ensure all reminants are removed first, please take a look at my recommended steps in this post:

If you follow those instructions and re-install, it should be like a "fresh" install.

Also, when you create a new backup, please use a unique name - especially if you have older backup files that may be attached to the machine on some other drive, or could be attached at some point in time - if you feel the need to use the same name, append something to the end such as _A, _B, _C, (etc. - each time you want to cleanup, but use the same name).

Thank you for all your suggestions. I started with Repair, it did not help.

I then did uninstall and full cleanup, redownloaded and reinstalled. It again stops at about 50%.

I had no such problems with TI 2015. It looks like I'd better find an alternative and try to get a refund for the "upgrade".

Thanks again for trying to help, I really appreciate it!
