Backup file size incorrect

Thread needs solution

Why does Acronis 2017 show backup file size for my server as 38 GB when Win 10 shows that as 54 GB?

More information would be helpful. Without knowing, I can speculate:

- ATI images are stored in a compressed format, so will normally be smaller than the original data.

- Some temporary files are by default excluded from backup images. For example, I think that by default Hiberfil.sys is equal to the amount of RAM. So, if you have 8 GB RAM then that's an 8 GB Hiberfil.sys file using disk space on your system drive but not included in the ATI backup. Pagefile.sys is also excluded from the ATI backup.

- If you selected just certain drives or partitions, then you may not have backed up the entire drive.

Very quick response Tuttle.  Thank you.

I have 32 GB RAM.

My 'C' drive with Win 10 appears to backup to the same approx. file size with Acronis.

My Server 'D' is an entirely separate hard drive with ALL my files (no software).  Acronis 2017 shows the correct drive 'D' selected but only 37.8 GB of 'data selected'.  When I check the actual drive properties with Win 10 in File Explorer it shows 58.9 GB.  How do I know if the entire drive is beling backed up?

It's a server but with no software (no OS?)? Is it a server, or just a networked hard drive?

It is a separate drive in my same computer, no OS.  It is networked so I do not know technically if it is a server or is just used as one.  I just upgraded to Acronis 2017 yesterday so I am unfamiliar with the new 'window'.  The 'Server Backup' window on Acronius shows 'files and folders' so because of your original comment, I am going to retest to see if it will show 'drive'.

I will post again after this test.

Tuttle

My test still shows 'files and folders' (which is what thery are, not a 'real drive', but it now shows the correct GB.  It will likely take an hour or more but I am going to do a test backup and will post again after this is complete.

Much appreciation for your assistance. Harry

A separate drive in your PC? That is not a server. Anyway, 38/54 = 70%, which sounds about right for a compressed .tib image of mixed files. If most of it were media files that are already compressed, e.g. video and audio, then you wouldn't get so much new compression.

In future you can help the MVPs to help you by being clear in your issue. This article may help:

Re-posting sooner.  When this backup started the Acronis window immediately switched from showing 54.8 GB 'selected;' to 34.8 GB.  So I remain uncertain.  Any response to this ?

Screenshots of what you're seeing would be useful.

Thank you again.  I will review the links you sent before creating any new posts.

Harry, download a copy of the Log File Viewer app (link below in my signature) this will show you what default exclusions are being applied to your backup task, plus if there are any other messages being recorded in the log.

Besides, that, as Tuttle has already advised, we really need more information to work with in order to help you.  Another helpful utility program is TreeSize Free from http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/?language=EN which can help you identify where your largest files are stored on your drives.  You could compare the output of TreeSize against a similar output gained by mounting your backup image file as a drive letter, then using TreeSize again to see what is missing?

Thanks agin Tuttle and another person who responded.  I believe you have solved my issue.

Before I start the backup, the window shows file size the same as file explorer.  It is only when I start the backup that it changes to the lower GB.  I will attempot to attach the before and after screen shots but agian, I believe the size in the window just changes to the compressed file size.

Apologies for not being more technically informed but I have been using Acronis for many years and the new program takes geting used to.

Thank you steve

I have downloaded TreeSize and will have to study to learn how to use.

As I mentioned to Tuttle, I believe my issue is respolved.

Thank you, Harry

It's a bug (or just not a good design) at the moment.  It's been brought up in the forums before as well and I believe that Slava stated it would be addressed in the next upate (I can't find the post right now thougy).

Yup, before a backup, it shows the size of all backups as Windows File Explorer adds up all of the .tib backups within the backup job folder for that task.  Upon running, it then displays the size of the actual backup itself.  Basically, there really needs to be 2 identifiers, one for the total backup size which is always constant for what Windows sees it as and another for the backup size, which should always be blank until after the backup completes.  I don't think Acronis can calculate what a backup size will be before it's been run (not sure) since it probably depends on how it gets compressed in the process based on what type of files are included in the backup.

Thank you Bobbo

My last Acronis was 2009 and I actually liked several features of that which are gone.  Such as the calender which also showed notification of success or failure and more of a file explorer style selection of backup file or drive selection.  I will just have to get used to this 2017 version.  Tonight is my test to see if all backs up correctly after the tips on this forum I received today.
