Backup keeps hanging

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

I need some assistance with troubleshooting my back up. For some reason, it used to work ok but for some reason, it is always hanging now in the middle of a backup and will be stuck with no activity.

I've already tried uninstall, reinstalling, doing a CLEAN uninstalling using acronis uninstall tools and recreating the backup job and creating a new job again. I am using VSS to try and do the backup through acronis.

I've already checked the VSS doctor tools from acronis and everything seems to be ok. I've already checked through the logs and there are no real visible logs saying what is wrong with the backup other than cancelled by user or whatnot or forced shutdown from me.

What should I do next? I am using Acronis True Image 2017 by the way. Thank you.

yoyobeans,

When it gets "stuck" how long are we talking (minutes, an hour, several hours)?  The "remaining" or estimated time when backup running can fluctuate all over and can be way off.  The reason being, is that when large chunks of data are being read or copied, the go quickly.  But when you start getting into the file system folders where there are lots of nested folders and small files, disk performance goes waaaaay down - especially on spinning disks or external USBs.  So, what could start off showing only needing 30 minutes to backup 100GB, could go to 20 min, then 2 hours, then back to 1 hour, etc. and ultimately take a couple of hours depending on your PC specs (CPU, memory) and the types of hard drives involved for both the source and destination.

Basically, just recommending that maybe you start a backup before bed and see if it's done in the morning when you're not looking at it, or if it really is having trouble completing.

Also, you may want to run chkdsk /R on the source and destination drives - just to rule out corruption.

And, what is your destination - USB, a NAS?  Could Windows power settings (UsB power save or spin a disk down with no interaction) be at play, or a low voltage UsB port, causing things to drop out?

Have you also tried creating an offline backup with your rescue media, to compare the behavior to what you're seeing in the Acronis GUI in Windows?  You could create 2 rescue media and compare both - the default Linux rescue media and a WinPE rescue media (winpe also uses VSS, but would be run from WinPE instead of the OS).

So many possibilities... what's your OS too?  There are a lot of online forums about the latest April Windows updates tanking system performance in Win 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 - especially with specific antivirus programs.

thanks for the tips! I'll definitely give the offline backup a try and report back if it works out ok to see next steps i should try. I am on windows 10 1809 :X

i've left it to backup overnight many times or throughout the day and it just never continues and just stays in the same progress of backing up and not doing anything and no hard disk activity or anything.

I am using malwarebytes premium also
