Backup location not found on destination drive

Thread needs solution

I have been using ATI 2017 to backup my windows 10 internal drive to an external usb drive for several years. The last backup failed with the message that "the backup location could not be found on the destination drive." The external drive is working. I can read and write from the external drive without problem and there is plenty of room on the drive.

I created a new folder on the external drive and tried to save the backup to that folder and I received the same error message. Apparently Acronis does not see the external drive. It worked last week but not this week. When I check the external drive for errors the drive is good.

Is this Acronis' subtle way of getting me to update my program?

Stuart, welcome to these public User Forums.

The first suggestion here is to try reselecting the Destination for your ATI 2017 backup task, reselecting your external USB drive and the location where the backup files are stored.

Steve, thanks for the suggestion.

When the most recent backup failed and I opened ATI, in the backup window there was an "x" in the middle of a red circle between the icon for the source and the icon for the destination. When I clicked on this red circle I got the error message about the destination folder not being found. When I switched to a different destination folder the red circle was still there. I assumed that ATI was not seeing the destination drive. However, when I clicked on "backup" the program initiated the backup routine and when it finished, the red circle was gone.

I have no idea why the original backup failed. But the user interface is deceiving, because the red circle, which I assumed indicated that the backup destination was not recognized or was not available, was not giving me an accurate status report.

It seems the failure of the original backup was a one-off event and that there is no problem with the application or with my external drive. I mistakenly thought the red circle meant that the external drive was not available for one reason or another.

Stuart, glad that the backup has been able to run successfully.  The red circle X is simply an indication that the last backup failed but not what the actual cause was for certain.

I would recommend downloading a copy of the MVP Assistant log viewer tool to help in case of any further issues as this will allow you to review the log that each backup task creates.  See the link in my signature.
