Backup size

Without changing any settings that I am aware (short of a massive Windows update doing something I am not aware of), the size of my backup doubled  from 85 GB to 180 GB. Not sure what happened, or how to even look to see what happened. I did another backup right away to after a restart, and the size remained high at 170 GB.

Any advice on where to look, or what settings may be contributing to this would be appreciated.

Rick, the first place to start is to download and use the MVP Log Viewer to check what messages may be written to the backup task logs for your double size backup files.  Link in my signature below or else can be accessed via KB 59335: Acronis True Image 2017: Community Tools

For this type of increase in size, it is possible that you may have a bad disk sector which has caused Acronis to switch to doing a sector-by-sector backup which will be almost the size of your source partition(s) less the amount that compression can save you, i.e. approx. 20% on average.

Thanks for the response. I have downloaded the log viewer, but really don't understand what I am looking at, or looking for. I can post two logs;  5/26 where the size backup was about 84 GB and the next on 6/3 where it doubled. By looking can you tell what happened? The only change I recall is updating drivers that week. Also, if I restore back to 5/26, might this restore it to the smaller backups? Thanks for your help.

Rick, thanks for the log file information, I don't see any indication in this as to why you backup size should have doubled in size, i.e. there is no mention of switching to sector-by-sector backup mode etc.

Where are you looking at the sizes to compare them?  Is this looking at the information shown in the ATIH main GUI, or are you looking at the actual file sizes on your E: backup drive?

The second log does show some errors during the automatic cleanup (shown as Consolidation) phase of the backup.

2017-06-03 09:53:39:164 20700 E000B03E9: Error 0xb03e9: Failed to open data stream. Try to remove the backup from the list, add it again by clicking 'Add existing backup' and recreate the backup settings.

Whatever the reason for this data stream error, the later messages show that automatic cleanup did run and was successful.

2017-06-03 09:53:40:958 20700 I013C0006: Operation has succeeded.

Steve, I am looking at the actual file size on E: and it now takes twice as long. Almost two hours compared to 50 minutes. Do you think if I roll back to 5/26 this might correct the problem? I have done 3 back ups since and they are all massive.

Rick, I would be more inclined to try to determine what is giving the much larger backup file size?

Please try mounting one of the large backup image .TIB files to a drive letter, then use a utility such as TreeSize Free to see where all the extra space is being consumed?  I suspect that you may find that this is in hidden system folders and may have more to do with System Protection settings that with Acronis?

Thanks so much, Steve. I am not familiar with the ins and outs of mounting. I started to do this and a screen came up listing four drives all checked to assign letters to and mount, including my C drive and partitions. I assume this is the image, listing the partitions ? There are two letters F &G that I can assign to the two drives listed.  I don't want to mess anything up. I have read the manual, but still can not figure out what to check or uncheck. Any guidance would be appreciated. I tried to paste a screen shot, but it would not work.

Interestingly, every backup gets reduced by about 10GB. So, I have gone from 190 GB to 180 GB to 170 GB and the last to 157 GB.  Strange.

Rick, from your description, you are likely including 4 partitions in the drive image, so I would expect that the C: drive will be the largest, and the others will be such as the EFI or System Reserved, plus Recovery partitions (of which there can be several!).

You can also just double-click on your main .tib backup image file and this will open in Explorer and show you the original partitions that are included - in essence you may only need to mount the largest of the partitions in order to try to determine what is taking up all the extra space?

To post any images in the forum, first click on the top right corner icon (silhouette of mountains & sun), then upload the image to your personal storage area, finally click on select for the uploaded image which will embed it in the comment text area.

Are we able to tell anything from this, or do I need to do another Tree on the smaller Tib file? To be honest, I don't know what I am looking for to solve this. The pic is clear when I paste, but fuzzy when I look back at it. I see 86.4GB in System Volume. I thought this was an exception?

treeC.png

Here is the smaller file size backup. It is pretty clear that System Volume information is much higher- 45 GB higher. So, what is my next step to try to reduce? Thanks for your help, Steve.

TreeG.gif

Rick, the simplest way to reduce the backup size is to use the default exclusion which would omit all System Volume Information from the backup.

Default Exclusions.png

Steve, I already have that exclusion. That's why I was puzzled. Also, as I look at my current C drive mount, the actual size is only 40GB. So not is it not excluded as it should be, but it is doubling. In looking at the log, I see that is shows as being excluded. The good news is that for some reason it didn't take two hours this time.

Rick, if the System Volume Information is set to be excluded but isn't being so, then I can only suggest trying to create a new backup task and see if this does exclude it correctly, if so, it would suggest that there is a problem with the old backup task configuration file.

If the new backup task does the same and ignores this exclusion, then you may need to try doing a Repair install of the Acronis software - this just means doing an install of the full version installer over the top of what you have.

You may also want to try running the Acronis VSS Doctor tool - link in my signature, and see if this finds any issues with your System Protection / VSS configuration (which also uses the System Volume Information space).

Thanks, Steve. You are providing me with so many helpful tools I did not know were out there.

Unfortunately, I backed up as another task and set the exclusions to be sure System Volume Information was to be excluded. Not only was it not excluded, but it appears to include it twice. Thus, the large size. Where can I find the full version installer? Also, this problem coincided directly with the latest Windows massive update. Not sure if this is related to the problem.

So, I even added C:\\System Volume Information as an exclusion, however not only is it included, it is doubling in size and takes up 50% of my back up. I have read a lot of posts, and have seen similar discussions where exclusions are not working. I can only assume that the Windows Update (the recent big one, Creative...) had something to do with this.

Thanks for your help, Steve. It doesn't appear this is easily fixed or understood.

Rick, when you got the error for VSS Shadow Storage Status from the VSS Doctor tool, did it offer you any options to fix the discovered error?

If not, or if you have tried any options offered but still see this problem, then I would suggest checking your Windows 10 System Protection settings and perhaps turning this off to clear out all such allocated space, then resetting it to your desired settings.

Windows 10 System Protection.png

I just logged on looking for an answer.

I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE -- THE SIZE OF MY BACKUPS DOUBLED !! WTF ???

This occurred on two seperate backups (Disk + Partitions) to two different external HDDs.

I did a backup last evening and everything was normal sizewise.

I thought that today's WIN 1067 Update might have something to do with this but that makes little sense.

Now I see another victim with the same issue.

As a matter of pratice I only keep one System Restore Point, so I don't see how anything related to System Protection or VSS is the culprit.

Not a happy camper.

Let me know if you discover anything. My only theory left is the Windows Creators(2 hour massive) update somehow caused a hiccup with Acronis. It happened right after that. Nothing else has made any sense, or worked as a fix.

I see others had more significant problems after this update. I have not rolled it back to see if that was the problem. Just haven't had the time to sit through that update again.

Hi Rick :-)

Will do.

My issue occurred after today's WIN 1067 Update. Not using Creator's Edition.

I have a suspicion there will be others checking in with a similar issue.

Very disappointing - Acronis has saved my butt several times in the past. Have found System Restore to be not reliable.

Wondering if a restore from the oversized backup would work.

I gather that if you have bad sectors Acronis goes into sector-by-sector mode, or something like that. Can't afford to lose use of my PC ATM while it does a full chk disk for bad sectors on a 2TB HDD.

OK so this is really messed up.

I tried a third time and the backup was successful and normal size. I have little on my HDD ATM.

I did a D+P -- The Source said 114 GB Selected which compressed to 83 GB.

I then immediately went to make a duplicate backup on a second HDD (external HDDs can fail). The Source this time said 157 GB Selected !@! WTF? During the first backup approx 43 GB of something was added to my drive. I cleaned my drive with CC Cleaner and AVG Tuneup but the size did not go down.

So I proceeded with the second backup. Despite the fact that The Source stated 157 GB Selected, Acronis backedup 198 GB of stuff that compressed to 185 GB.

There IS A PROBLEM.

Thunderhawk, have you tried the suggestions in this topic to analyse where the extra space for your backup file sizes is being consumed?  This is what Rick was able to do and identify that the space came from System Volume Information, hence the direction this topic took.

If this is a failure of ATIH 2017 to handle the exclusion of System Volume Information correctly, then this needs to be raised by both yourself and Rick as a Support Case with Acronis so that they can investigate the root cause and provide a fix for the product.  One key difference here is that you have Windows 10 1607 whereas Rick has the Creators update 1705? version.

Hello Steve :-)

Don't have time atm to run this down. Frankly, I do not understand how creating a backup to an external HDD could add 47 GB of stuff on my PC's HDD.

In another bizarre twist, I just installed an update to one of my programs and I somehow lost that extra stuff on my HDD that was created during my last backup -- it's back to where it should be and where it was before my last backup. This retun to normal had nothing to do with the relative size of the program update.

It appears I may have a trickster in my machine. Very strange. I have edited my last comment to reflect this. In light of the foregoing, do you have any further thoughts about what the issue might be?

Will be doing another backup later this evening and will report if any weirdness in sizes, on my PC or in the size of my backup, materializes.

Thanks for taking the time to offer assistance.
