Backup Size Incorrectly Reported

Thread needs solution

I have a SSD and a 1 terrabyte storage disk.  The latter does not need to be backed up.  Windows 10 Anniversary, Synology NAS for backup.

Setting up my routine backup I choose to untick the storage disk - so only about 170 GB to back up from the SSD.

Next time I want to do a backup the Disks and Partitions to backup reports 600GB to backup, ie it includes the stoarge disk.

When I click the choose disks and partitions the storage disk is still correctly unticked so I accept and then the correct amount to be backed up - 170 GB - is displayed.

BUT - next time I open Acronis we are back to the 600 GB figure.  Sounds like a bug to me.

If you right click the storage location and select properties, what is the total used space.  The reported storage in Acronis is the sum of all backups in the storage location, not just what was currently backed up.

Thanks Bobbo,

Sorry, haven't made myself clear enough.

I have a saved backup process in Acronis for my computer.  As above I only want to back up the SSD, not the 1TB storage disk.

When I open Acronis there are two boxes. The first states disks and partitions and below that it states 600 GB of data selected.

That tells me that Acronis is selecting the storage disk as well as the SSD. But I have only selected the SSD to backup.

In order to check that I click the disks and partitions box and find that only the SSD is selected, NOT the storage disk.  As this is the correct choice of disks I click okay.

The disks and partitions box now correctly states 170 GB of data to backup

When next I reopen Acronis, the disks and partitions box incorrectly reports that there are 600 GB of data selected to backup.

This is my problem.

When you configured the initial backup task, did you select "entire pc" or "disks an paritions"?  If "entire pc" was the selected option, this could be the cause of the behavior.

As a test, I would create a completely new backup task with a new, unique name (it can be similar, but don't make it exactly the same).  When selecting the source, hover the mouse over it and you should see the option to change the type.  Make sure to select "disks and partitions" and then specifically only select the SSD drive and all partitons on that drive (making note that nothign else is selected).  Configure everythign else exactly as you want it and then run the backup the first time to save the settings.

If things are still not as expected, perhaps you could post some screenshots of what you're seeing?  Also, grab FTRPilot's logviewer and check the service logs to see what it's actually configured to backup. YOu can post some service logs here too for additional eyes that might be able to pinpoint an issue. I'd still start with a new backup task and see if the behavior goes away or is repeated in that one.

Thanks Bobbo,  Have already deleted and started a new backup twice - same result.

Will post screen shots of what happens and look at the logviewer.

Unfortunatley must start work now - may take a couple of days before I am back online.

I am very grateful for your time and attention.

Ray

Hi Bobbo,

Not too busy working so can explain further:

Open Acronis - see screen 1 - 637 GB selected

Change source - screen 2

Save changes screen 3 - correctly 174.7 GB selected.

Close Acronis and re-open - screen4 - 637 GB selected!!!

Hope this fully clarifies problem.

Ray

This does appear to be what was explained in comment #1.  Did you check the properties of the total size of all backups from within windows file explorer to compare/verify?

Acronis is showing the total backup size of all existing backups for this task, not the size of the disk that's being backed up currently.

I've noticed the same thing here with 2017.

When I first start TI the top of the screen correctly shows the total of all backups - 1.5TB.  But the Disks and Partitions display in the center of the screen also displays 1.5TB.  If I click on the Disk & Partitions button and then simply cancel it will now show the correct 365GB worth of data to be backed up.  Just confusing and should be fixed.

David, please submit feedback directly to Acronis development using the Feedback tool in the ATIH 2017 GUI Help section with a reference to this forum post plus your findings.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for reporting the issue. I have brought Development Team`s attention to it.

Of course, wrong backup source size displayed does not have any negative effect on the backups themselves.

Regards,

Slava

Slava, is this the same issue as acknowledged in topic: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/109636#comment-395570 where it is "a known GUI bug record in our database (internal ID: TI-84427) where the size under "Entire PC" is increased each time backup is created. This problem is reproduced only when the backup is saved to a USB drive which appears to be exactly the scenario like in your case. The fix for this problem is pending to be done in one of updates for Acronis True Image 2017 and/or newer versions."
