Backup of windows file shares to USB - speed and freezing

Thread needs solution

I have a Freenas Server which holds 4 TB's files which I access on my Win10 PC.

I purchased an 8TB Seagate Backup USB 3.0 external.  Ran all the tests (hub, directly to usb, crystal scores, etc) and it is running as can be expected.  About 199/194 R/W on benchmarks.  The folders are zvol/zpool.  It is a mirrored pool of 4x 3TB = about 6TB.

FreeNas machine is using an A4-6500, 16GB matched 1033 DDR3.  1GB Ether going to 1GB switch.

Windows 10 PC has i3-3570K (OC to 4.2) , 16GB.  Nothing unusual in either machine. Machines have SATA3 connectors, Drives, and Cables.

The files being backed up are predominantly copies of my DVD's (iso's) for  a media server.

The first time I ran the backup, selecting the file folders as source and my 8TB US as destination, after several hours everything just stopped.

I am doing a repeat of the process which has been running for about 5 hours and has copied 1TB of data and estimates - Acronis seems to make wild estimates at times - another 15 hours for backup - it is an initial backup.

Couple of questions:

(1) Have you encountered crashes in these situations, and if so, how have they been solved?  By crash, just meaning that acronis stops doing anything, you cannot access the disk, and you have to reboot.

(2) Does this backup time seem reasonable?

Thanks in advance for your time and help!

Can you clarify what the source of the backup is, (Windows PC, NAS, USB external) and the destination (repeat)?

I have a FreeNAS server configured much the same as yours.  I have not attempted to backup 4TB of data to it all at once but have done a 1/4 of that with no problem.

The 8TB external drive is attached to your Windows PC or to the FreeNAS server?
