Backups not visible after clean Windows reinstall

Thread needs solution

After having made a backup (which I could successfully reinstall), I carried out a clean Windows install. I have now discovered that that was a bad idea (as the install is anything but clean; programs installed on D: are not - or only half - removed). I have therfore re-installed Acronis True Image 2017 (that was removed).  However I only have the option to make a new backup; the existing backup (below) are not shown. How can I reload the old backup?

Peter, welcome to these User Forums.

Please use the Acronis Rescue Media Builder tool and create the bootable media on either CD/DVD or USB stick, then boot your computer from that media with your backup storage drive connected in order to recover your latest backup image (dated 25/10/2017).

It is not recommended to try to do this type of OS recovery by starting from the ATI application running inside of Windows - this will still require the computer to be rebooted and will need to alter your Windows Boot Configuration Data store settings to do so.

Using the bootable Rescue Media is the safest / best method to use here and you can choose the relevant image file to restore from.

The Rescue Media should be booted using the same mode as used by your Windows OS - see webpage: Check if your PC uses UEFI or BIOS to check this aspect.

Hello Steve,

Thank you for this. Unfortunately, when I run the Rescue Media, I see a message "Loading, please wait", then the screen goes blank and nothing happens (even after several hours). This applies to both a CD I made in July 2016 after my initial purchase (and which - together with my printed instructions for it's use - I had totally forgotten about) and a new one made today. The activity light of the computer flickers for a little while and then goes out; the light on the external hard drive with my back-up (F:) stays on. If I choose Windows in the Rescue Media menu, Windows opens as normal and I see drive F: (with it's light on all the time; this light thus indicates connection, and not activity). My PC uses BIOS.

Peter, if you are able to do so, I would recommend trying booting from a USB stick with the Rescue Media rather than CD, though from your description, it sounds like the CD is getting you to the initial Acronis menu selection, so perhaps there is something more at work here?

The default Acronis media launches from a Linux Kernel OS environment and this may be an issue with your computer here.  Acronis provides a second rescue media type based on Windows PE but requires that you download and install the Windows ADK (about 3GB) in order to create this type of media, but which may be more compatible with your computer.

If considering the Windows PE approach, then you only need to install the top 3 Windows ADK components shown in the installed window options.

I suspect that you have never tried using the Rescue Media on this computer else you should have discovered these issues before needing to use this media in anger.

Hello Steve,

I am glad to say that my system is now successfully restored! The problem was that I was not connecting my back-up drive (F:) before leaving Windows to boot from the Rescue media (only doing this after the computer was turned off). Once I fixed that everything went fine. I did, after initial purchase, do a (successful) test restore from the Acronis program, but probably not from the Rescue media. I have now made good notes on that procedure for the next time.

Many thanks for your patient assistance.

Peter, thanks for the feedback, glad that all is resolved and you are back in operation.
