Basic overview newbe question

Thread needs solution

I am totally new to True Image 2017. I got my copy this morning and wanted to get an overview on how it does work and what I need to accomplish.

I have this laptop that I need to clone into another somewhat similar laptop. (Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 2 & Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 3)

My questions are:

1. Do I need to install Acronis True Image 2017 on both Laptop?

2. I have only one license key. Will I need to purchase a second key?

3. I did and entire PC backup of the source to an external drive.

4. How do I know this PC Backup has the data, the OD and all other system files to restore into a new laptop?

5. Can I just do a restore of this PC Backup into my new Laptop and be done?

I need to understand the big picture first.

Thank you.

Welcome to these user forums.

What you are asking can be done using ATIH 2017 but there are a number of caveats to that statement.

You will need to create the Acronis bootable Rescue Media and use this to restore your backup of your source laptop to the other laptops by booting each laptop in turn from this Rescue Media.

You will also need to create the Acronis Universal Restore bootable Media as what you are doing is migrating your source laptop backup image to different hardware, unless all three laptops have got identical hardware including all internal components.

All of the Acronis bootable Media (Rescue and Universal) has to be booted in the same way as your Windows OS boots, which if these laptops are very recent are probably using the EFI bootloader whilst on older machines, they would boot in Legacy / CSM mode.

Depending on the type of internal drives in your Lenovo laptop and any restrictions it has, you may need to create the Windows PE version of the Acronis bootable Media in order to have all the necessary device driver support for that hardware - this will be needed if your laptop drive is set to work in RAID mode rather than the standard AHCI SATA mode.

I would recommend taking a good look through the ATIH 2017 User Guide as a starting point to understand the principles of using this application and also look at the Universal Restore Guide for the requirements of migrating backup images to new hardware.
