Cloning a TiVo drive?

Thread needs solution

The searched posts on this topic appear to be ancient, i.e. 6-7 years old. Has anything changed for TI 2017 (or '18) such that an old mostly working TiVo drive can be cloned to a new one - as the answer was basically "NO" back then.

FYI: In case it matters: My TiVo is a DirecTv Tivo model THR 22-100 which will format a blank drive on its own. I've done this once replacing the spinning drive with an SSD some years ago. It's getting flaky now - probably a lot of bad sectors. Don't want to lose all those Wish Lists, Season Passes and programming.

It is possible that TiVo use exotic file system, or as they did during its brief availability in Australia, used some sort of encryption.

The first thing to do is to find out what file system is being used on the drive. If it was me I would use UFS Explorer Standard Recovery which would show the file system used for each partition on the drive. While it does not allow cloning, it will allow you to copy the files to a PC. The program costs about 40 euro and supports a wide range of file systems.

The various PVRs I have used allowed the copying of files from a PC to the PVR via ftp, so recovered files could be played on the device. Not sure if TiVo allows this.

You may be able to clone the HDD management utility. I suspect that Acronis Disk Director may have the same limitations as ATI. Once you work out the file system used, you should be able to determine if a particular utility will allow you to clone the drive.
