Created USB restore media, PC won't recognize it.

Thread needs solution

I'm trying to transfer my Win 7 install from a regular HDD to an SSD.  Once the emergency boot USB (basic, not Win PE) and backup file USB were created, I removed the old HDD, installed the SSD, plugged in the rescue USB, booted up the PC and chose the rescue USB as my boot option.

The BIOS recognizes all the drives, and it is not UFEI.

Why won't the system boot from the rescue USB?  Thanks in advance for your help.

How did you create the ATI Rescue Media "boot USB"? And, is it on a USB flash drive?

I clicked on the Create Rescue in the Acroins 2017 user interface.  It is on a USB drive.  I just plugged the USB drive into another PC and it appears the rescue files are on it.

Steve, what size is your USB drive - it should not be larger than 32GB - only 1GB is actually needed?

What do you mean it won't boot?  You see nothing on screen?  You see an error message? 

Also, what is your boot order in the bios - it won't automatically boot if it's lower in priority than the main hard drive or other media.  Have you tried your one time boot menu or boot override menu?  check out the screenshots from this post for additional reference on bios boot override menus and/or bios settings you may need to configure locally (assuming the media is good and actually bootable).

I might also suggest doing a full format (not a quick one) of the usb drive - to ensure that the old bootloader is wiped out first.  It is not uncommon for other tools to modify this and leave it unbootable as result.  Doing a full format will help ensure you're starting with a "fresh" bootloader when using the rescue media to built it.

 

Through trial and error, I discovered that my initial install of True Image was corrupt.  I did a System Restore to undo it and then reinstalled the software.

I reformatted both USB drives and made both a new rescue USB (this time with Windows boot) and new backup USB.  I checked both USB drives for errors (none found) and proceeded to boot from the rescue USB and run the restore to the new SSD.

It's been 24 hours and everything on the new drive appears to be working fine.
