Fall Creator's Update 1709 cannot be installed because af ATIH 2017 interference??

Hallo Steve Smith,

it is impossible to update to Windows 1709. Have tried everything.

Someone recommends to uninstall ATIH temporarily. Cant believe that.

Have you got any idea?

I haven't seen any problems with updating to the Fall Creators update 1709 and having ATI 2017 installed - I had one PC running on the Windows Insiders program with ATI 2017 and this had upgraded to the latest Build 17017 which is the next one after 1709, and done this automatically!

How are you trying to do the 1709 upgrade here?

When I have hit problems with any of the earlier updates, I have created an Installation USB stick for the new release, then run the Setup executable from this using Explorer from an active running Windows desktop, so in effect doing an in-place upgrade, and that has worked fine.  Had to do this for some of the earlier Insiders builds.

That's exactly the way i did it with the stick. Still, installation stops at 89%, sometimes at 95%.

I do love W10 and its update procedure. Hardly any update without trouble.

Just for a try: is it sufficient to temporarely deactivate the Acronis services instead of uninstalling the programm and then reinstalling?

Joern, have you tried stopping / ending all Acronis Services and Processes prior to attempting the upgrade?  If they are all stopped, then there should be nothing from Acronis that can cause the upgrade to falter at the end of the process?

When the install stops at 89 or 95% are there any messages to say why it has stopped or does it simply hang at that point?

Yes, I stopped all Acronis services but didn't help. That was the reason for questioning uninstallation.

No, it just gives a message, that windows can't be installed, but no specification or number of the fault.

Hi Joern, if you have no active Acronis services or programs showing in Services.msc and Windows Task Manager, then there should be no way for ATI should cause this problem.

It could potentially be caused by any active security applications you have running?  I have a number of computers all running the 1709 Update which all went virtually silently due to restarting outside of my active hours.

I guess that you may need to uninstall ATI 2017 to prove it isn't causing this issue, but would recommend making a backup of your C:\ProgramData\Acronis data folders to protect all your task configuration and history data.  Restore this back before reinstalling ATI.

Just to confirm that Windows updated itself safely on the spare machines I have that still run ATI2017.

as expected deinstallation of ATIH 2017 and DiskDirector didn't change the picture. I even deactivated defender --> nada.

So I guess, I have to wait for the next update. Though my hopes to be successful then are really minimal. There must be something in my machine - but what?

Hi Joern, thanks for the update but sorry that you haven't found a solution to this issue yet.  As you say there must be something about that computer.

One further thought - can you create another User Profile on this computer and try the upgrade using that?  A bad / corrupted user account can give some very strange problems!

This may be not related but in my case, I found that if I change the location of my user folders such as Documents, Favorites to a network drive, the ATI has trouble installing but if I restore the User folders to it's original location, all is well/

Pavel, thanks for your update, will need to wait for Joern to reply to advise if he has made such changes on this problem computer.  I try to keep these things as simple as possible so have never tried to change this type of User folder location - I just put my documents etc in a new location and add this to the Libraries.

Hi Steve,

thanks for post. Tried new user account, but didn't work either. Seems it boils down to some defect in RAM. Although clean install on another HDD (instead SSD) in same PC with same RAM worked fine.

It's a miracle. Waiting for possible further update tonight. May be ....

Thanks for the update Joern, very strange indeed!

I was having the same problem with ATIH 2014 that had been uninstalled years ago. There were no services running. Nada. But, I had the program in storage on a USB Drive, 'K'. After spending half a day redoing and refreshing I deleted those folders and ran the update again. 

It installed with no further problems. I suspect that the Windows update touched upon those old exe files, analysed them as being incompatible, which they are, and then stopped in its tracks.

I suggest renaming any exe files to 'whatever', or remove them, and see what happens.

I was fed up after all and decided to clean install 1709.

Everything went smoothly and the system runs with no complications now.
