File Recovery

Thread needs solution

I am facing recovery for first time.  Had to do a clean reinstall of Win 10 on new hd.  I have Acronis backup on external SS hard drive.  I need to restore apps running under Program Files(86) directory.

Will restoration of those apps also restore the apprpriate Registry settings?  My old C: drive became infected.  So, I need to be careful what I restore.  Any suggestions on how to proceed would be welcome.

James, sorry but any Acronis backup cannot be used to restore programs and applications, due to the fact that it is not as simple as just restoring the files involved to a single folder etc.  Most applications also store data in a number of other places, including the Windows Registry files and other system folders.

See KB 19296: Acronis products cannot be used to transfer applications to different system or upgrade OS which confirms this point.

Thanks reply.  I understand.  I guess if I was recovering the entire backup, I would get everything including registry settings.  I now understand I cannot recover individual apps.  I will use Acronis to recover those C: files that do not involve the registry.  I will have to reinstall the PF(86) apps manually.

Jim, if you have an older backup from before the infection problem then you could do a full disk restore from that, otherwise you will need to be selective of what you restore using files & folders because of locks held on the same by the OS etc.

Thanks Steve.  Sadly, I do not have a pre-infection backup.  I have been nursing this problem for a couple monhs. New 1 TB drive installed as C:. Repair tech is installing OS - Win 10.  I have placed the infected C drive in the D: drive position.  That way, I can do file transfers from D to C.  I will download and install program apps. So, it looks like Acronis recovery would not benefit me due to the nature of my issues.  I have some very important Data files on the old drive I must recover.

Jim, understand the issue and sorry to hear that you don't have a good backup to fall back to.  Just double-check any files that you do recover are fully free from any infection / malware.
