Files & Folders Backup Setup Questions

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

Looking at creating a backup schedule for my data..So files and Folder backup. I want to set it to do one full backup once a month, once a week and once a day, so effectively 3 different schedules, but hoping these schedules will be incremental after the 1st one. Can Acronis do auto deletions of older backups based on criteria set by myself or at all?

Basically I have a 5TB NAS that I will be backing upto. Currently I will be backing up about 500MB as my 1st backup but after that, more than likely very small changes.

If there is a better way of doing backups I appreciate some guidance?

Cheers

John, welcome to these user forums.

You can do as you outlined with creating 3 different backup schedules (monthly, weekly and daily) where you select to create a new full backup for each following by X number of incremental backups, then repeating this sequence.  When using this approach you should ensure that each backup task has a unique name and uses a different target backup folder on your NAS drive, keeping them separate from each other.

You can then also configure automatic cleanup rules which will work on complete backup version chains, i.e. 1 x full backup plus X x incremental backups = 1 version chain.  The cleanup rules only remove only version chains when a new full backup for a new chain has been successfully created.

You have several options for how automatic cleanup will decide that version chains are removed.

Example: Store no more than X recent version chains will cause X number of chains to be retained then any older chains to be deleted when the X+1 chain has been started successfully.

Another option sets a version chain age, but the caveat here is that the age doesn't start counting until the next version chain has been started.

When using incremental versions, it is not recommended to create very large numbers of these files as this increases the risk of encountering problems should any individual file become corrupted or damaged, as that would break the chain from that point onwards rendering the remainder of the chain unusable for recovery purposes.  Hence the suggested approach of creating a new full backup after creating X incremental files.

The problem with ATI home is that the solution from Steve will create 3 full backups (one for each task).

There is no way to a single backup task with laddered frequencies as you want. Each backup task will be linked to a full backup.

When you do daily incremental backups, you can quickly end up with a long chain of incrementals, which tends to be a problem, since any pb in an intermediary file corrupts the entire backup afterwards.

Many users have files that don't change that much (videos, pictures, music, etc.) and files that change everyday (quickbooks/quicken, etc) AND for which you want to keep versions.

FOr files that don't change that much or that are irreplaceable, I wouldn't use Acronis file backups. Putting these files into a proprietary container is counterproductive. You can include them into a system backup once a month, and/or backup them more frequently if necessary using Windows File History or some sync software that keeps deleted files. For files that change often you want to keep versions of, you can use True Image home file backup daily and have another simple file copy or sync locally or in the cloud for redundancy.
