Steen, simple answer to your question is No.

.TIB are archive container files, similar to having a ZIP file where the contents are compressed and may also be encrypted depending on the options used when the backup task created the .TIB file.

Microsoft will not permit Windows to be run from any USB drives unless you have a Windows Ultimate license and can create a Windows to Go drive.

I know this is the case with recent versions of Windows, is it also the case with XP? I cannot remember.

Not sure why there is the need for XP booting from USB device. If you want to carry it around with you, you could creat XP in a virtural machine, and run it that way. That would allow you to tie-down XP as it its long term support expired some years ago and it is no longer a safe OS to have exposed to the world.

Ian, the core question asked was about booting from a .TIB image on USB which definitely is not possible.

I have used Hiren's Boot CD lots over the years and this allows a mini-XP environment to be booted from a CD which could be migrated to a USB stick but even Hiren's has a limit of 24 hours before needing to be rebooted, which I believe is a limitation of Windows PE type environments.
