Help with restore

Thread needs solution

I did not have this problem in the past.  Now, I am having a problem with restore.

I back up the whole disk (Disk 1 or main drive) every other week onto  a separte D-disk ( 4 tb).   There was no problem with backup.  I am using McAfee antivirus proglam.   I tried to restore a recent tib backup (whole disk).  I got an error.  It prompted that you will need recovery tool.  Error code: OxC0000225.  Restore with all tib backed with 2017 ATI prompted the same error message.

My Dell computer is a year old and came with windoes 10 but it did not come with windows 10 re-installation disk.  So my computer is now out of commssion.  How can I revive Windows 10?  Suggestopm would be asociated.

If you have access to another PC with internet connection, you can get the Microsoft MediaCreationTool which you can use to creat Windows 10 installation media (either DVD or USB). You can then use it to do a Windows Recovery. As far as I am aware you can only get the 'creator edition' of Win 10, but that probably should not matter if you are just doing a repair.

When you get a PC without recovery media, you should use the tool provided by the manufacturer to create recovery media. I bit of a pain but you never know when you need it. I have always done this and to date have not needed to use it.

Jorge, how exactly are you trying to do the restore of your backup .TIB files?

The OxC0000225 error says there is a problem with the boot device? See Status: Oxc0000225 in the Microsoft forums.

To do any restore, you should be using the Acronis bootable Rescue Media to start your system, then use the Recovery function from the Acronis application - checking that it can see both your internal and external disk drives.

If you are attempting to do the recovery from within Windows, then this has to modify your Windows boot configuration and attempt to boot the system from a temporary Linux OS environment from which to launch the Acronis tools.  This can be problematic to say the least, especially if your backup files are on an external drive for which additional device drivers may be needed but which are not included in the default Rescue Media.

You can download an .ISO file image (to burn to CD) of the standard Rescue Media from your Acronis Account online.  Try this first, and if needed, disable Secure Boot in your BIOS settings if this is a UEFI system.

Thanks.  I use both Acronis bootable Rescue Media (CD and flashdrive).   Both caused the same error.   I  am trying to download windows 10 iso to retore windows.   Could you enlighten me what cause problem boot section ?  My Dell desktop is a year old and worked very nicely.  is it possble that a virus caused boot problem?

Jorge, when you say that you have tried the CD and USB flashdrive, which version of the Rescue Media are you using?

Is this the standard, Linux based, media or have you created the Windows PE version of the media?

If your Dell desktop is only a year old, then I would expect that this has the UEFI BIOS and may also have Secure Boot enabled which can cause a problem with the Linux rescue media.  Try disabling Secure Boot in the BIOS security settings and try the media again.

Can you boot a different PC from the CD or USB Rescue Media to test that this does work correctly?

See webpage: Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool for an alternate means of creating the Windows 10 install media but understand this will be a large download once you run the download tool and pick the specific version you want to use - be between 3-5GB in size.

Rescue media was created from the Acrnis True Image 2017 version.  5-6 years ago, i created PE version rescue media.  Now  i forgot how to do it.

Again, for backup, I create tib backup within windows, but restore has been done with rescue flashdrive (i.e., out side of windows).  I felt that flashdrive is more convenient than using a CD.  I have used restore on other Windows 10 desktops and a laptop.  It worked well.    This time, I am having a lot of problem this new Dell desktopo 8900.

BTW, inititally i tried to store tib backup in a 4-tb portable drive.   I found that it was incovnenvient.  Something was running in the backgroud, I got to wait to inititate backup (within windows) but no lag period when a separate hard disk is used to store  tib.

At home my desktop was upgraded to windows 10 (automatically) from Windows 8.1 (that came with windows 8 initially).  That hardly causes any problem with restore at all.

Jorge, in ATIH 2017 creating the Windows PE version of the Rescue Media is very easy.

Open the Rescue Media Builder tool then select the WinPE option and if you do not already have the Windows 10 ADK installed, you will be directed to the download site to get this.  Download the ADK (approx 6GB) and then install just the top 3 options shown in the ADK installer, which are the only ones that are needed.

Once the ADK is installed, you can create the WinPE media by taking the same Builder option which will create the default Acronis build with no additional device drivers included.

You can use the MVP Tool - Custom ATI WINPE Builder tool (link in my signature) to create a customised WinPE USB stick and include the Intel RST drivers needed if you have drives set to use RAID mode for SATA and include other device drivers from your system if needed.

Thanks.  I will try to create PE version of rescue media.  What is the advantage of  rescue media with and without PE?  Do you think PE-rescue media woudl prevent the booting error which I encountered earlier like OxC0000225?

I recall that I used to add some programs (textpad, total command, etc) during the creation of PE-rescue media.  I might be wrong on this one because my memory is quite fuzzy at the moment.

Jorge, once you have the Windows ADK installed, the Advanced version of the MVP Tool ATI WINPE Builder tool will give you a number of added extras including a web browser, file manager, PDF viewer etc.

The main advantage of the PE media over the standard Linux version is the ability to work with UEFI Secure Boot, plus more compatibility with a greater number of hardware devices provided via the ADK along with the ability to inject more drivers such as the Intel RST needed for RAID device support.

Thanks for your encouraging comments.  I will try to build PE-rescue flash drives next week.

I have quite a few unused 8gb flashdrives.  Is 8gb enough?  It looks I should get 16 or higher  gb sticks.  Please let me know.  Windows ADK could be a huge file.

Jorge, you can use a USB drive of 1GB which will work fine but 8GB is more than enough.  I have a mix of both 1GB and 16GB sticks that I tend to use but the 16GB sticks show over 14GB free space with everything included.

Where can I find an instructional manual for creating PE-window 10 rescue disk?   Many years ago, an instructional manual was avaiable then for creating PE-rescue disk with Windows XP (or 7).  Is that avaiable under your signature line?

Jorge, there is no instruction manual for creating the PE media as far as I am aware, but in all honesty, I don't think there is any need for a manual as the process is straight-forward once you have the Windows ADK installed.

The process for PE media is no different to that for the standard Linux media if using the Bootable Rescue Media Builder tool.

If using the MVP ATI WINPE Builder script then this is fully guided with easy to read/understand questions about the options available, i.e. whether to create 32-bit or 64-bit media, to include additional device drivers etc.

Hi Steve Smith,

I made a PE-based bootable fish drive (8gb).  I could boot it nicely.  Thank you for your advise.    I have another related question for you.    Some  of my computers initially came with win XP, win 7 or  win 8.0, which had been automatically updated to windows 10.  Can this flashdrive be used  to restore  windows 10 for non-orriginal Windows 10 computers?

Hello Jorge, the PE based flash drive will work but this depends on which PE media you created?

If you have created 64-bit PE media then this will only work on other 64-bit computers.  If you have created 32-bit PE media then this can normally work on both 32-bit and 64-bit computers.

The MVP Tool - Custom ATI WINPE Builder tool can create both 32-bit and 64-bit PE media.

Thanks.  I created 64bit PE media.  I looked at MVP Tool - CUSTOM ATI WINPE BUILDER  under your signature line.  It looks quite complicated.  But I am tempted to try it later.

Hi Steve Smith,

You are definitely an expert for restoring windows.  I post a new thread entitled " How to Create bootable flashdrive for windows 10 ISO".    Your help would be very much appreciatec.
