Imaging in DOS

Thread needs solution

I have a question and I looked through the whole manual and couldn't find the answer. But need confirmation before I purchase. Can ATI 2017 do an image backup from DOS? I would like to image some Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 4 hdd's and obviously I don't think ATI 2017 would run on those OS's.  I'm assuming if the anwer is yes, that there is some type of bootable software that comes with ATI 2017?

Thank You

Danny, welcome to these user forums.

The answer to your question about ATIH 2017 running in DOS is No.  However, you should be able to run this on a Windows 7 or higher system assuming that you can connect the older HDD's to that system.

The key factor in imaging drives from these very old version of Windows is the formatting used by those drives which is likely to be FAT16 or FAT32 which is supported by the software.  See the ATIH 2017 User Guide: Supported file systems

I suspect that your biggest challenge will be finding a means of connecting these old IDE / PATA drives unless you have an older computer with the cables for this type of drive.

ATIH 2017 does provide bootable Rescue Media which can be created on CD/DVD or USB stick and used for making backups and doing recoveries - the standard media uses a Linux Kernel but this in turn requires a PAE capable CPU in order to boot, so again, if you are using an older Non-PAE CPU this can also be a challenge.

These same challenges will also apply to other backup products unless you can get your hands on an old copy of such as Norton Ghost which was intended to work with these older computer systems.
