Input re upgrading from 2016 to 2017

Thread needs solution

I've been using acronis true image 2016 for close to a year and find it's pretty ok. Is the upgrade to 2017 "safe" in most of your experiences? Sometimes upgrades bring more issues than they solve. The only issues I've had with ati 2016 are that I found the guidance for restoreing to vm insufficient for me to be able to pull it off, as far as I tried, and that the documentation is lacking at the depth that is needed for a complex product like ati. Thankfully grover and others have provided very useful guides and forums posts that cover many of the bases that are thin in the docs.

sim, if you are happy with ATIH 2016 and it meets all your current requirements for this type of application, then there may not be very many advantages to upgrading to ATIH 2017 at this time.

ATIH 2016 & 2017 users all now have upto 2 years of support from date of purchase, so you can open a support case directly with Acronis as needed.

The key difference that I would expect is that you are unlikely to see any more updates for the 2016 version now that Acronis is very much focussing all their development efforts on the 2017 version, unless a very significant new issue arises that impacts large numbers of 2016 users.

I take it from your response that there are no appreciable downsides to moving to 2017; you spoke more to the other side, which is that it's a lot the same. Good enough! I may upgrade in order to get the updates. If I do update, will my backups continue as-is, or is it more prudent to create new backup tasks from scratch?

Sim, if you upgrade then your backups should continue as-is.  The only caveat in that respect is if you have previously upgraded from earlier versions, if so, then I would recommend going for a clean install of the 2017 version to keep things nice and tidy.

You can save a copy of your current backup tasks by saving the C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts folder contents if you want to save time on configuring these after doing a clean install.

On the positive side, 2017 adds new features that may be of interest to you, this includes making backups of Mobile devices (iPhone and Android) to both local PC and Cloud, plus support for newer devices etc, as well as including fixes for known issues, as well as more updates to come through the year.

I agree with Steve's advice. In particular the desirability of uninstalling ATI 2016 and running the ATI cleanup utility if you did an in-place upgrade to ATI 2016. If so, I would also save a copy of your current backup tasks so that you can copy them back after installing ATI 2017.
