Intermitent problem performing backup

Thread needs solution

I have 4 machines running Windows 10 Professional and Acronis True Image 2017.  Each machine has a 2nd hard drive used only for holding backups of the "C" drive.  Before running backup, the oldest backup set is deleted to make room for the new backup.  Backups are performed nightly.

I've noticed on several occaissions on one of the computers the previous night's backup will have several sets of the backup file.  Apparently what happens is it starts over and creates a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th set of the same backup.  Perhaps validation of the backup is failing?

I thought the 2nd hard drive might have bad sector(s), thus causing the validation to fail.  I removed that hard drive and installed a freshly-formatted drive as the 2nd drive.  It worked fine for a while but got the same issue - multiple backup sets.

I have never run into this issue on the other 3 machines, running the same operating system, same hardware configuration, and same version of ATIH.

I would appreciate input as to the cause or solution to the problem.  TIA.

Deleting the oldest backup set is most likely the reason why you are seeing issues here, especially if this is being done outside of using automatic cleanup for the backup tasks.

Acronis will never delete older backup before having first created a new full backup as this is intended to prevent a situation where you might have no backups available.

Acronis tracks all backup files using an internal SQL database so manually deleting files outside of the application messes up the database which will lead to other errors.

Each night I run a backup.  When it is created the name will be something like this:

    OFFICE4 - 202303_full_b241_s1_v1

The next day I'll rename the file something like "OFFICE4 - 20230325" just to make it easier to keep track of.  I'll also delete the oldest backup file from the D: drive.  But because I'm deleting the file using File Explorer ATIH doesn't know the file is deleted?

Sounds like the solution is to run System Clean-up every now and then to get rid of the old backup in the database, right?

James, why don't you just use the ATI Cleanup rules and let ATI delete the oldest version. But then you'd need to keep the name so ATI can keep track of it properly.
