It takes 4-5 minutes after opening Acronis for the UI to show up

Thread needs solution

I have been having serious performance issues with my copy if true image 2017. For some reason after opening the program it takes 4-5 minutes before the user interface will show up and while clicking around in the interface it will experiance ocasional hangs between 30 seconds to several minutes. Personally the only thing I can think of is that the team programming the UI doesen't grasp the concept of ASync programming and that the long delays are caused by the client waiting for some background task to complete.

I have tried both a repair and clean reinstall to resolve the issue and once I readded the backups to the client it started having the performance issues again. The really hilarious thing is that the machine is not some bargan basement dell but a high performance desktop with an solid state hard drive 32 gigs of ram and a i7 processor and honestly nothing short of a software bug can explain this.

I'd open a support case with Acronis to have them verify this and troubleshoot with you.  No idea what version of Acronis you have installed - are you using the newer NG version with ransomeware support?  There are others reporting some conflicts with that.  There are also others showing high cpu utilization with certain Acronis serfvices such as mobile backup (which you may not even be using).  I can't really help with those, but we have put together some basic .bat scripts that can allow you to easily shutoff certain Acronis background services if you don't use them.  Me, personally, I only use Acronis and schedules for my needs so I turn of mobile backup, syncrhonization, dashboard, etc.  You can tweak them as you see fit if you want to use them.

the .bat scripts are on our MVP Google Drive:  https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B8uZDIFmupY7TE1QU2VoZ01ZaFE.  You only need to run them once to stop or start services (in most cases).  And you can comment out or remove the comment out sections for the services you want to stop or start and whether or not you want to set them to disabled (so they don't start again) or set them back to automatic.

All of this can be done manually in Windows >>> control panel >>> administrative tools >>> services (right click and run as administrator - even if logged in as administrator" if you prefer.  The bat scripts just help automate so you can double click them on the fly ot turn things off or on.

The thing is I have had so many issues with acronis and frankly I am lothe to give them any money through a Pay Per Incident system for software defects that they apearantly never bother to fix untill you purchase their next update if at all(Still having some minor issues with the tib browser that were present in 2015)

But you do have a point about the background services being a cause of the hanging. However this does indicate a major defect in that the UI was not programmed using asyncronis tasks that would allow the UI to function smoothly while waiting for background tasks to finish

But I am not using NG and I dont plan on it because honestly its a waste of money to use cloud services when hard drives are so cheap that you can maintain multiple offline offsite backups with minimal effort. I kinda want to get rid of acronis however since all my backups are in TIB format its kinda hard to at this point.

If you have an ATI 2017 licence you get 2 years support - emial and live chat (freed phone support is limited to those with a subscription).

There is definitely something wrong with the way ATI is opening. My recollection is that the number of attached storage devices will have an impact - but even with 8 SSDs/HDDs it loads in less than a minute on my main system.

Have you tried using the ATI cleanup utliity? Detailed instructions are here.

Ian

The issue with doing a full clean install using the cleanup utility is that it wipes all your backup configurations while the TIB files would still be present without the ability to import export backup settings this would mean a long time spent recreating some of the backup tasks aside from the basic disk backups for the OS there are quite a few independant backup jobs for specific folders that need to be backed up more frequently or have longer version chains.

But actually the system usually has 4 drives connected though 3 of them are spinners with only the operating system on a SSD though I am wondering if the issue might be my external drive bay which is a 4bay port multiplier on a ESATA card (I use this because the hot swap capability is usefull and lets me use bare desktop drives like old school tapes swapping out backup volumes on a regular basis for my offline and offsite volumes. )

Yes, technically, doing a cleanup and fresh install means you lose your configs.

However, technically, you can save them and bring them back in again to.  You might just be bringing in some of the problems with it again, but you can try it.

Before you do the cleanup, backup the following folders.  You'll likely need to exit Acronis and STOP the Acronis services from control panel >>> administrative tools >>> services, before you can copy these somewhere:

C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts        (this is where the scripts live)

C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database     (this is where the old database lives... I would back it up, but personally, I would not import this back in)

After doing a clean install of Acronis, launch it once.  Then exit and go back and STOP the services.  Replace the Scripts folder with the one you backed up.  Start the services and launch Acronis again.  Your backup jobs should be there.  You'll still have to go through and pick the source/destination for each job and/or set the default settings again, but your backup jobs will be there.

Not entirely sure what the acronis database does but i assume this is where the program keeps track of the tib files and which backup they belong to ?

will not restoring the database prevent the program from locating existing backup volumes

Mike, the scripts folder / files contain the task configuration information.  The database folder / files contain the task history information, including the UUID for the drive(s) where backup files are stored etc.

You can safely leave Acronis to create a new clean database if doing a clean install and just restore your Scripts / files for your backup tasks.

Acronis will recreate the database contents as you run your backup tasks.

If the issue is caused by database corruption would it be possible to just clear the database folder or will acronis flip out if you do this without reinstalling ?

Mike, it is very unlikely that the problem you are reporting in this topic is caused by a corrupt database but you are welcome to try forcing a rebuild of the database before doing the reinstall.

To do this, you need to stop all Acronis Services first then end all Acronis Programs/ Processes as these hold locks on the Database files.

When everything is stopped/ended, then navigate to C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\ and then rename the Database folder to Database.OLD (or delete the folder).

Launch the Acronis True Image application and it will rebuild the Database folder and files.
