lost disc capacity

Thread needs solution

Yesterday I cloned my HP2000-210USA computer's hard disc drive to an Acronis SSD and installed it. I am using Windows 7 64 bit OS. The computer now works much faster, but the SSD is 1TB and my computer shows C: drive of 298 GB, D: drive of 298GB and a Q: drive that I cannot access. C & D drives only add to 596GB, so how can I access the remainder of the memory? Norman

Norman, welcome to these user forums.

I would suspect that when you cloned your HDD to the new SSD you did so 'as is' i.e. using the partition sizes as they were on the original HP HDD.

You should be able to check this by looking at Windows Disk Management where you will probably find that you have a large amount of unallocated drive space.  If this is the case, then you can either create a new partition in the unallocated space or else you can expand one of your other partitions into that space (if this is permitted).  The alternative would be to use a third-party partition manager tool to resize your partitions.

Dear Steve, thanks for your response. You are right. I was able to turn one empty section into an F: drive which shows up when I select Computer.

There is a large unallocated section that I selected to change to a simple basic NTFS usable storage, but when I go through the Simple Volume WIzard to make the change, I get this error message and I decided not to make the change:

"The operation you selected will convert the selected basic disk(s) to dynamic disk(s). If you convert the disc(s) to dynamic you will not be able to start installed operating systems from any volume on the disc(s) (except the current boot volume). Are you sure you want to contnue?"

Well, I hit "No", as I did not understand the difference between a dynamic disc and a basic disc, and since all the other sections of my SSD are simple basic NTFS types, I just do not know how to proceed from here to allocate the space on the SSD.

Norman, it would be best if you could post a screen shot of what your Disk Management is showing for the SSD drive so that we can be sure of advising you correctly here.

Do you have more than one drive in this system?

See webpage: What Are Basic and Dynamic Disks? Features for Dynamic/Basic Disks for an explanation of the difference between basic and dynamic disks.

dear Steve, I got an error message when I tried attaching a photo of my screen. Is there another way to get the photo to you?

I have just the one drive in my computer.

I read about dynamic v. basic & I think I want basic. Norman

Norman, you should be able to attach any screen shot images using the File attachments link below the text input box where you post comments, the only limitations are a max size of 20MB and only the file types shown below the button to 'Choose File'.

The alternative here is to download a copy of such as the free Easeus Partition Manager and use this to create your new F: drive partition in the unallocated space on the new drive.

Dear Steve, i tried several times using the attach file feature, but I kept getting error messages.

Anyway, I downloaded the Aeseus free software and fixed the storage issue.

Thank you very much for your help. Norman

Norman, glad that you have resolved the storage issue, thanks for the feedback.
